I’ve got transactions from “PAYPAL *WISH COM 35314369001 NLD” on the 4th and 5th of April still showing as Paypal instead of Wish.com (which I’ve submitted a merchant update for).
It seems to be showing PayPal as Microsoft now?!
We’ve run into a small issue with this
There’s a group that seems to have a few merchants linked so if we change one it changes all. But this doesn’t happen for all PayPal merchants
@kieranmch might be able to explain it better and what we’re doing about it
OK Kieran fire away!
Sorry for the pressure!
Essentially, we add merchants into groups. McDonalds has over 4000 individual merchants assigned to it.
If you change the merchant information for a merchant assigned to a group, that changes for the entire group. There are safeguards to prevent large merchants being changed but merchant information is pretty messy generally so there can be multiple PayPals for example.
I may be in the office over the summer so I might be able to clean this up a bit!
To add to this, the problem in this case is that many PayPal merchants are thought to be the same merchant in our system. So when we update say, ASOS, it drags a load of other merchants with it and screws up everyone’s feeds.
For now we will keep this merchant as PayPal until we get time to fix it! Thanks for your patience.
Interesting to read this thread and see the other angle on this.
I was personally going to suggest that Paypal transactions should be labelled as Paypal instead of the useless usernames it currently displays. But the Paypal username it currently displays could be put into the notes field instead.
In particular I figured that when you take cash at an ATM it just says cash & so Paypal is essentially the same case as that so it should just say Paypal.
Now if this allows big merchants to be displayed individually such as Megabus, Wish,… then that is a good thing but probably a small set of Paypal merchants in the overall pool of paypal accounts.
So how about:
a)By default it shows Paypal & puts the Paypal merchant’s username in the notes field.
b)If a big merchant via Paypal then label the transaction as being with the big merchant.
I think this would be misleading, as I don’t buy anything from or have any contract with PayPal. They are just the payment processor (instead of SagePay, Worldpay, etc) and so I want to see the name and possible logo of the merchant I bought from.
There’s many use cases to Paypal but as most of my transactions are peer to peer ebay payments then Paypal is what I do want to see on my feed. Braintree transactions (Paypals actual payment processor solution) don’t get listed as Paypal. But by default I think the transaction for those should come up as Paypal but if anyone sends through the actual merchant details then that merchant should indeed be listed as the actual merchant in the feed moving forward.
20th April this was last mentioned and it’s still not fixed! Come on guys sort it out please.
I recently changed my Xbox payments from PayPal direct to from card and this is annoying me lots
I believe you have to submit a correction, maybe it’s used on the Microsoft store as well as Xbox and doesn’t show as Xbox because of that?
Is this for Microsoft Azure? I have the same but Xbox transactions show up as Microsoft Store. Interestingly, the page for MS Azure no-where mentions Paypal and you just need to provide card number etc.
Is there an update here? This still seems to be affecting my joint account and it’s very frustrating. If there’s manual action people need to take, please can a Monzo person give us clear instructions? For me, I just see PayPal direct debit with no details. Thanks
My Xbox Gold/Game Pass are still showing up as PayPal each month too.
If your PayPal is set up to use Direct Debt, Monzo doesn’t receive any details of who the merchant was, so there’s nothing that can be done there.
If it’s set up to use card, my experience is that Monzo will use the merchant info PayPal sends through, even if it’s a merchant they haven’t seen before.
I also find the Paypal handling annoying. We pay for groceries using Paypal, and the Paypal transaction has the supermarket name in it. I submitted an “improve name” and it now comes through as the supermarket name in the app, but with the PayPal logo. Suggestions to change the logo go unanswered. As far as I am concerned, Paypal is a payment method and it should look in the app as if it was the merchant I paid, not Paypal. It’s minor, but it stands out to me!
