All PayPal payments show as PayPal with the PayPal logo

I can sort of see the logic here. When you pay a merchant using Paypal, what you’re really doing is paying Paypal, who then pay the merchant (and which is why using Paypal with a credit card breaks section 75). So I can see why it has been changed.

I also agree with everyone in this thread who says its not very clear, and would concur with the suggestion that one logo should overlay the other - either Paypal overlays the actual merchant to show they were paid by Paypal, or the merchant overlays Paypal to show who that Paypal transaction was for.

to me the first of those two options is preferable

And that was just rude

This would work well for Android pay transactions etc although may start to look a bit cluttered.
At least the info should be under the you tap on the transaction.

I would not want the logo too big, similar to how the Monzo bank logo appears on their staff’s user profile photo here on their Discourse community

I get you, or the same as other contacts who have Monzo under the payments section of the app.

That’s far from always true. On eBay and many other sites, if you pay for something ‘directly’ by debit/credit card, they use PayPal as the payment processor (instead of SagePay, Stripe, Worldpay or the many other payment processors). I’m not logged in to a PayPal account, I simply put my card details in, and PayPal processes the payment. It would be like all SagePay transactions having a Sage logo and saying SagePay instead of the merchant. Illogical and unhelpful if this is indeed what’s happening. (I’ve not bought anything online since this change supposedly happened, so can’t say from personal experience.)

I agree with all the comparisons to Worldpay, SagePay etc. By showing up as PayPal it disrupts things like Merchant Transaction history etc - I don’t care how much I’ve spent through PayPal, I’m far more interested in how much I’ve spent at each individual merchant. (I realise this could be done with Notes and searches but it’s far less elegant)

A logo of this sort of size in the feed wouldn’t add too much clutter in my opinion, and could be a nice differentiator for different payment methods.

(Edit: Although I wonder whether brand/logo guidelines etc would prevent this from being possible perhaps? Would still be nice though…)

Hey all  I’m an engineer on the Product team.

I was surprised to see this too. I’ve had a chat with the team just to figure out what’s going on here.

I can confirm this is not an intentional change, but that some of our rules for mapping PayPal payments to actual merchants have stopped working. This could be because there’s been a change in the format of the payment references used by Paypal.

In the meantime, I am sure we would all rather see PayPal than Megabus

We are looking into this and hoping to fix it.

Thanks
Kieran

Quick update - I have a meeting on Tuesday to go over the PayPal issue and figure out what can be done.

This should be fixed for new merchants. If anything in your feed is still showing as PayPal please report it through the in-app merchant feedback system.

Thanks for your patience!

Thank you!

I also love the idea of the PayPal logo appearing for these transactions, much like the way the coin jar transactions will show up in the future update - should fit in quite nicely

What is classed as a “new merchant”?

My Megabus purchase today again showed up with the Paypal logo ; submitted the in-app details.

Megabus definitely won’t be a new merchant, so please report this in-app so we can fix it.

Cheers!

Hey Kieran!

Seems that COps aren’t fully up to date on what’s been said here by yourself

After reporting some faulty merchant data last night, this was COps’ response:

I’ve just heard back from the team - unfortunately we don’t have a solution to this at the moment, but our specialist team is working on it so hopefully we will have a fix soon!

I’ve got 3 transactions from the same merchant (MandMDirect), one via PayPal on the 29th Jan, another via PayPal on 10th Apr and final one (via card directly this time) on the 11th Apr. :stuck_out_tongue:

Despite it being 3 transactions to the same merchant, the names are all different, they aren’t linked up in any way (i.e I’ve not got a “Number or transactions = 3” in the feed item, etc.

I’ve reported correct merchant data for them all, to ensure they all match but I’m not sure why COps aren’t able to do anything about it yet, it’s the stark opposite of what you’ve said here  Don’t read this as me being frustrated haha  Just trying to figure out the non-joined up nature of this cosmetic issue at Monzo

Happy to provide any information you deem as useful :+1:

Guess it takes a day or two for all cops to be informed, of updates, there are a lot of them now!

Thank you for alerting! I’ll follow up.

Hi all,
I’ve communicated this to COps. As you might expect, the info will take a while to propagate to everyone. One of the consequences of extreme transparency is that sometimes you will find things out before all of our staff do

Thanks for your patience on this.

Awesome stuff! Cheers

Will I need to do anything manually? Or will the PayPal transactions fix be reflected in my feed automagically? (along with my merchant information updates for MandMDirect) :sunglasses:

I hope it never changes  Haha!
