AirPods Pro 🍎

They’re no more disposable than a phone.

I’m liking this accurate prediction skill. Any chance you have the winning EuroMillions numbers for this Friday’s draw?

Sadly I can only predict my own behaviour

I bought em. I… do not like them. And I am a fully fledged fanboy.

They’re okay if I’m sitting still on the tube, but walking down the street I have to constantly push them in more. None of the tips make a difference. If I laugh or smile or chew they fall out.

It slightly helps to angle them much further forward so the longer part are facing towards your mouth rather than straight down but this doesn’t always help. There are thoughts on Reddit that the tips become slick from oils in your ear after use but this dries out, which kind of aligns with mine - they are fine sometimes, unusable other times.

Honestly I’d have returned them and stuck with my PowerBeats Pro but I do really like the sound and sitting on my (stupidly long) commute at the moment with them is nice, and blocking out the noise in my (very chatty) office.

I’ve found this too with the left ear, it slowly works it’s way loose and fell out the other day outside :flushed:. I need to try the other tips and see if that makes any difference.

I have discovered they survive a 40c wash cycle.

I have gen 1s as well and mine are in the same boat - battery and one dropping out of Bluetooth. Isn’t it a shame that given the cost they’ve lasted around 2 years or so!

I’ve stuck with them and despite occasional awkwardness with one workign its way out of my ear no matter which tip I try, they’re very very good. And from what I read online, most people don’t have this issue, but some people must have differently shaped ear-holes  There are a bunch of third party foam tips coming out too which I might give a try at some point.

I think overall they are very comfortable, great sound, work without fault and if you can get them to stay in your ears while you walk/talk/eat/smile then they’re brilliant.

Left one stays in with the medium tip… Right one I’m having struggles with especially when laughing to a podcast! Large tip seems to be working the best at the moment.

Also, sometimes when I’m running/walking I can hear a tapping noise in time with my strides, like somethings knocking in my ears. Anyone else have this problem?

Got my AirPods Pro yesterday, and took them out for a cardio session this morning. I have to admit that they’re a marked improvement on anything else I’ve tried. In particular:

  • Great noise isolation, which I needed since it’s a noisy gym
  • The AirPods stay in place, and don’t wobble (as the JayBird Run had)
  • No issues with coping with sweat, which had been an issue with others I’d tried

A couple of less positive points, or maybe just things I need to get used to:

  • They’re a lot less bassy than my previous earphones
  • A couple of times when I tried mopping sweat from my face, I accidentally pressed the button on the AirPods, causing them to skip forward. Will try switching off the controls in case that feels like a better option.

Overall, though, head and shoulders above anything else I’ve tried.

Something that has massively frustrated me with Apple and the AirPods product in general (AirPods and AirPods Pro) is that it has no anti-theft mechanism at all, despite other products by Apple having them.

As an example, with your iPhone you can use the Find My app to track it’s last known location, but importantly lock the phone and display a message and contact details, rendering it useless without being returned or without doing some lower-level device manipulation to override it. As of the latest OS, other people’s iPhone/Apple products will be used to pick up location data of the product and ping back.

However, with AirPods/AirPods pro, which let’s face it, you’re more likely to lose because of their smaller size and not being glued to them like your phone perhaps - the functionality is much more limited. You can only track their location in the app - you can’t disable them. I wouldn’t expect you to be able to set a message that is audibly repeated when they are in use or something but surely to lock them at least!

What makes it worse, you can reset them then and there by holding down the button on the case and syncing it to a new phone/account immediately. That’s really bad and makes them really easy to steal.

And yes, sadly this is based on experience - and I know it’s ultimately my fault for being pickpocketed/not taking proper care of them but I find it a massive oversight that this functionality isn’t available for such an expensive piece of kit!

They’re also exempt from many ‘gadget’ insurance policies, which stings even more!

I haven’t got AirPods (regular or Pro), but FYI, Apple stores appear to have plentiful stock, as they’re offering same-day pickup at most of the London locations.

  1. You get 3 different size rubber seals in the box. I haven’t found massively differences between them but they will help you get a better fit. So you can use a different size per ear and that may help.

  2. The noise cancelling is basically non-existent on the originals but it is very good on the Pros. It won’t get rid of a loud bang or anything, but something like a train journey, the constant drone it deals with very well.

  3. I find the fit better. I had one AirPod that didn’t fit as well and if I ran with them, that ear would always need adjusting or I felt like I was pushing it in more. The Pros with the rubber bits seem to grip better. I wouldn’t say the fit is much different but I think the rubber helps them grip better.

I know it’s not currently viable, but I did go to Apple to test the fit first. But their returns policy is very good if you get them and decide against them.

I do agree about taps vs squeeze but it soon become second nature like all of those sorts of things.

I’ve not had any issues but I don’t really use Hey Siri on them that often.

I was also hesitant to upgrade but I bought some in February and I genuinely think they are one of the best things I’ve ever purchased.

Had always hated the feel of in ear headphones but the pressure is alleviated well and the noice cancelling is excellent - has made just a difference!

I’d mirror what some other people said but to add some specifics… In my case at least I decided to try them for about a week and if I didn’t like them make use of the 14 day return. I upgraded from regular AirPods.

  1. The fit test will help - they come with three different sizes so you should be able to get one tip that gives you a good seal. The test software of this is good too, so I think you’ll be able to pinpoint the right fit (I also imagine by now there are aftermarket tips available?)

  2. I found that with noise cancelling it would cut out maybe 75% of the loudest background noise - typically traffic or the tube would sound like a low hum. The downside is I often miss announcements on trains when in noise cancel mode.

  3. I found the fit to be much more comfortable. Old pair I found where the stem and speaker part join I would ache on my ear after a little bit - don’t have that with the new ones.

Either way I find them a worthwhile upgrade.

I got my AirPods Pro back in February, and have to admit, they’ve been an overwhelmingly positive experience. I won’t rate your time corroborating what others have written, but here are a few additional experiences:

  1. The noise cancelling is second to none. The microphone located inside the earbud means they’re really able to block out 95% of ambient noise. And when you need to hear what’s going on (for example, because you’re working from home and expecting a delivery), you can easily switch off the noise cancellation (unlike the over-ear Bose QC-35 type headphones, which also have passive noise cancellation, which you can’t switch off)
  2. The sound quality and bass is much much better than the original AirPods
  3. With the majority of earphones I tried in the gym, sweat caused them not to work so well - creating a seal that impacted bass, or interrupting the sound altogether. The AirPods Pro have no such issues
  4. They also fit a lot better than previous iterations of the product
  5. The one issue I did have with them is that the left AirPod didn’t reliably sit in the case, and a few times, when I tried using it, it was completely discharged. Despite the fact I’d bought them from Amazon (when Apple had none available), the Apple Store first replaced the AirPods, and then when issues persisted, they replaced both the case and the AirPods

Essentially, with the AirPods, you’re getting great sound, great noise cancellation (and I have Asperger’s, so am very particular!), a pair of earphones that fit and work whatever you’re doing - and if things go wrong, a reliable company behind them that’s willing to sort out any issues.

In my opinion, a no-brainer!

I am so happy I found this thread  in need of a new phone and there’s an 11 pro deal that comes with the AirPod pros and I wasn’t sure if I should go for it or not…but now I think I will!

Thanks everyone in this thread for your insight
