Been using it heavily for the past couple of days. My subscription was YouTube Red (I signed up whilst in the US) so I’m getting YouTube Premium and YouTube Music for $9.99 a month which is pretty great.
Web interface is great. The Mixtape is GREAT (the personalised playlist). It’s very quickly adaptively learning. This is a real competitor to Spotify in this respect.
Until my own uploaded library gets ported over I can’t use it completely, so I’m switching back and forth between this and GPM right now, but this is a great first start.
It looks like YouTube Music will move to updates every 2 weeks. That’s a good pace. Right now, I’m just waiting for them to add the cloud lockers from GPM. That’s the only thing keeping me locked to GPM at the moment.
YouTube Music is already a much smoother experience in many other ways.
I had read somewhere, can’t remember where, that Google plan to migrate everyone from Google Play Music to YouTube Music eventually. Eventually Google Play Music will be retired, which makes sense since there is no real benefit in running two music services.
My guess is that they are hoping the YouTube brand will bring more people in.
Yes they will do eventually when they have ported all of GPM features to YTM.
I have to say I’m still not feeling it to be honest. The dark mode is excellent (only 4 plus years overdue) but the video aspect of YTM could of, and in my option should of been integrated into GPM. Not to mention the fact that YTM is a bit of a battery killer at the moment especially compared to GPM. Of course it could be argued that watching video would do that which is fine, but I’ve noticed it’s just as battery hungry listing to just audio though of course YMMV.
Instead you have Google competing against itself again. GPM or YTM? Hangouts or Messager? Google Photos or Snapseed? Don’t worry I’m sure in a few years Google will do what Google seems to always do and launch some other new music service for me to roll my eyes at yet again.
On reading that I sound really cynical but I do wish YTM well and I do use it but it has to have a lot of improvements before it can replace GPM.
The constant adverts for youtube premium on the youtube app are super annoying. There should be a permanently dismiss this advert option, if I wanted to pay then I would already

If that’s the stream by David Funk, I’m listening now - and I’m impressed.
I’m less impressed by his cavalier attitude to needle maintenance
There’s no need to touch the needle when turning the record - he could blow the fluff off.
When I listen to music on my phone I still use Google Play Music. I use YouTube Music if I can’t find something on Google. I think they should get their skates on and ditch GPM, as long as I don’t have to make too much effort to transfer my playlists.
I’m very much on the fence, I cannot be dealing with the way things are at the moment where YTM will clog up your regular YouTube subscriptions and history, YouTube subs barely work as is.
I’m leaning closer and closer to switching to Spotify, even before this change, but I’d find it hard to go without uploads.
I’m currently working on our support queue backlog and I pulled up a YouTube Music called “The 90 Greatest New Jack Swing Songs of All Time”… featuring the likes of TLC, Bobby Brown, Al B Sure, Boyz II Men, Bell Biv Devoe amongst many others. It’s a video playlist made by a user, rather than something made just from the digital music catalog.
The quality of the uploads is varied, of course. But what strikes me is that a huge amount of these songs just aren’t available on other sources, not Spotify, not Apple Music, not anywhere. In the past I’ve mitigated this on Google Play Music by using their cloud locker to upload hundreds of things that aren’t on the catalog, but that of course brings the limit of you just adding music that you know, it doesn’t help with the discovery aspect.
I’m a New Jack Swing veteran, and halfway through this playlist there’s already a few gems that I’ve never heard before and a few “lost classics” that have been out of print for years.
I signed up for YouTube premium a few months ago and really like YT Music but Google really need to work on bringing this within other apps. For example, in Google Maps navigation mode there’s Spotify and Google Music app but no YT Music and in Waze, it’s just Spotify.
On Android, they should also keep it running in the background like other music apps.
YouTube Premium without annoying ads is great but not much premium content there some very annoying shows
I had a go at the trial-period Premium last month.
While I watch quite a bit of YouTube: it’s primarily on the Chromecast and I don’t get hit with ads often enough to bother me. Occasionally I would like to listen to videos with the app closed on my phone, but again, not enough to make it worth it. I’ve never used YouTube for music, instead been a Premium Spotify user for a number of years.
For me, there just aren’t enough features to make it worth the monthly cost.
I used the trial and am now a paying YouTube Music/Premium subscriber.
I’m a podcast addict and a lot of the ones I enjoy are better watched in video form; this way I can download them and watch them on the way to work or when I’m out and about.
I love the fact I can easily switch from watching a podcast to listening and back, especially when I’m walking between different forms of public transport, changing lines or walking to the station or bus.
This is great but wish they work on sort of profiles. As most parents will now kids ruin the recommendations so whenever we ask Google Home to play wheels on the bus YouTube ruins my music on phone playlist
I’ve been trying to use ytm as my main streaming service for a while. It’s not bad but the app is buggy. I keep getting mostly the same songs in my daily download playlist.
I go back & forward between Spotify, Apple Music and google play/ytm. I wish I could just stick with one.
I’ve been using iTunes since it was sound jam and even though iTunes drives me mad i always get drawn back into it. It’s what I know, for good or bad.
Spotify is amazing. It’s has amazing playlists but culturally I’m still used to buying music and just can’t commit to it purely streaming.
Ytm is sort of a hybrid between Spotify & Apple Music. I can have my own music library integrated but it’s not quite there yet.
If I was starting again with none of my own music I’d just use Spotify and be done with it. But I can’t bring myself to let go.
Maybe it’s the thought of paying a subscription every month for life to listen to music.
