Working from Home

How do you manage this? I tried this the week before last and made it two days on my own in the office. I felt completely isolated. There was nobody else in the building apart from security two floors down.

It didn’t help that I walk to work and my commute felt like the opening scene from 28 Days Later :grimacing:

Start of week 2 for me. First day (Monday last week) was rough. I WFH often but before last week it was quiet. Now I’ve got the whole family and home-schooling to get through in addition to work!

It’s hard but I’m still going.

We have a morning video chat every day via Microsoft Teams which helps. I also keep the radio on all the time. I’m in a position where unlike everyone else in my company at the moment I have a mountain of work to do and am busting a gut trying to get it done which leaves me with very little time for thinking about anything else.

I occasionally face time my little girl which helps to stay sane a little bit as well.

I have to say though, I’m missing my team(well certain members) a lot more this week then I did last week. The first week of working alone didn’t bother me too much, today i’ve struggled a bit :frowning:

Anyone else feel like you have to be more available being at home?

If I was in the office and went for a walk to see someone about work, or to gossip, whatever. If someone emailed or called my desk phone, they wouldn’t expect an instant response. But I almost feel like I have to justify that I’m still working.

I like how you can now watch a lot more NSFW.

Any other Rick and Morty fans seen this?

Nope. I don’t take calls, and email I’ve turned off pop-up alerts and instead have set times I check it instead. Super disciplined, perhaps, but I’ve started as I mean to go on. I couldn’t get work done effectively if I was constantly switching to emails and responding to them as they come in. Better to have the email checking and replying as a task with its own time.

(Inspiration taken from the Pomodoro technique; similar task breakdown but not quite so strict with the timer.)

I almost tagged you when I posted it and said apart from you because after your other post, you seem to be doing extremely well with it and being very strict!

Whereas I took a call from our CEO as I was walking around Tesco this morning

For anyone who has an overly-sensitive Skype / Teams automatic status update, I found this handy dandy tool on Github - it wiggles your mouse every minute ever so slightly, so should stop skype auto-going to “Away” mode.

I’ve not felt like I’ve had to make myself more available. But I have been making much more use of my Slack status, so that it’s clear to people when I’m not available.

So how are we all doing now?

Anyone at this stage yet…

Hahaha is that Moon?

The film where he goes on a mission there and his crew leave him because they thought he was dead?

The Martian :man_facepalming:

Sam Rockwell is ace, last saw him in Jojo Rabbit. Decent film, but I also like Taika Waititi

Another week begins at home, how is everyone doing?

I’m trying to set better habits, I’ve started getting up a bit later, not a lot, but now I aim to get to my desk for 8am rather than closer to 7am as I was before. I’m still early and working before my start time.

In a way it feels like I’ve been at home forever and this is just my new normal. I can’t see me being back in the office for a while yet.

Well it was going well until my works laptop decided that the usb dongle it uses to confirm my identify to the laptop and the network decided to fail.

I’m in a 2 hour queue to get through to tech support to see what they can do, ordinarily you would just get to and go to the closest local office to get a new one but that’s not an option at the moment
