Working for Monzo?

Has anyone here heard anything good/bad about working for Monzo? My wife is considering applying for a data position (she was a teacher for a while but retrained into data/SQL/python a few years back and loves it) and I’m curious what sort of employer Monzo is. She’s loyal (to a fault) and I’d hate to see her end up working in an abusive environment…

It’s such a large organisation now it will probably almost entirely depend on the team and the line manager.

In the early days it was high energy and high positivity but quite cliquey and incredibly unstructured, that’s probably changed though.

Silencing culture is real here.

I worked there for a short time, didn’t enjoy the culture. Coming from high street bank to digital baby bank, I much prefer the corporate vibe with less fluffed up bullshit.

I was finhealth, but can’t imagine it changes per department.

I found it was a who you know culture, some people get away with murder but you retaliate in the same manner - boy you’re put right the fuck back in your box :joy:

Anyway, I hope you read quick cuz admins will quick fire a delete of any bad word of someone’s personal experience.

That’s fair, I’ll take a look at glassdoor. I figured it never hurts to get as many opinions as possible, and I’ve found there is a large wealth of knowledge on here.

Absolutely, I just think they’ll probably be a bit protective of their image on here that’s all - I was having a look at the Glassdoor ones after I replied, quite a good range on there!!

Thank you for that! It does make sense, to an extent. I’m not surprised Monzo have a very different culture to the high street banks (for better and worse). One interesting thing I noticed on the application - you get asked whether you are a US person. I wonder if that will be a good or a bad thing… (My wife and I are both American, though she’s here under my visa so wouldn’t need any sponsorship.)

That would make sense, though I haven’t seen that question on any other job application here. I was wondering if Monzo might be looking for US folks here, to potentially assist with Monzo US at some point.

There have been a few articles (particularly in the right-leaning media) about working cultures at Monzo, so you might want to search for that too to see if it’s a good fit. Of course there will be some bias to the reporting so take it with a pinch of salt based on your own attitudes.

If she works in data she probably won’t be, but customer operations have (in)famously been monitored to see if they’ve been engaging with Monzo systems every five minutes, and had a talking to if not.

I think this is the case at nearly every place you could work.

And sometimes “Who you know” gets blamed when someone is just good at their job, well liked and can communicate.

Being able to talk to people and being liked will get you a lot further than being good at your job in many many places. You obviously need to be competent, but beyond that a competent person with a personality will get further than someone who is better at the job but can’t talk to people.

I’m not too worried about this - it is an intrusion for sure, but she’s not the lazy type.

100% I have a friend who hires for DPD and he says 50% of his decision is based on how the person comes across. My wife tends to interview well (she’s got a bubbly personality and gets along with most people) so that’s a point in her favour.

Part agree, but being a total a bitch, and clearly getting away with it, doesn’t cover the above, just total favouritism (running trend here).

The culture was childish and not for me.

Maybe it’s a culture thing (I have read about far worse things US companies do), but I personally would never work for a company that monitors any employee to that degree. It’s very telling about company culture.

They’re all adults there to a job, and the carrot is usually better for productivity than the stick. There are better ways to monitor performance, like KPIs.

Sadly true, something I often think is to the detriment of a lot of companies but it’s definitely the way the world works.
