Why *haven't* you gone full Monzo?

This thread is literally designed for reasons why someone hasn’t fully used Monzo as their main account.

This is his.

So… get over it. That’s his reason for not being fully Monzo. Not good, not bad. Just his reason.

It’s literally a thread created to “complain” about Monzo. Jesus.

I dont think the definition of full Monzo is no other bank account.

Though I assume there isnt an agreed upon definition

Despite my Full Monzo badge in app, I would not qualify on that basis as I pay my mortgage (and nothing else) through my legacy bank

I’ve always seen Full Monzo as a case of paying your salary in (I do) and paying bills and main spending out (again I do)

Full Monzo definition is in the app…

I had to CASS my Starling to get that last tick though and to my mind I was already Full Monzo at that point. Gotta catch 'em all though!

Heh, yeah I’ve not bothered and not gonna, what’s the point?

I am a completionist

For me it’s 2 reasons.

1. I have an overdraft (with an interest free threshold) with Ye Olde Highstreet Bank, which I don’t really ‘need’ to pay off right now. (Yes I know, I know.)
2. I like to have my bills come out of my Ye Olde Bank, totally separate, so I can see exactly what I have to ‘spend’ on food / fuel / myself / etc  I just transfer the total amount that will be coming out of there that month, and out it comes  Don’t need to look at it.

Could you just use bills pots for your 2nd point?

Yup. I’m all about option 2 (shame on you for option 1… shame!! Ohh sorry, you know already (I’m kidding!)).

But yeah, option 2, clear separation is what has worked for me. All the bills get sorted, and I’m still able to better manage my ‘cash’ money using Monzo. Win win.

I’ve gone full monzo right away. I opened my monzo account last Sunday and the switch from my only other bank account will be complete tomorrow.

For me it’s mostly as there’s no choice. I have problems with gambling and managing my money is difficult. I used to let someone I know look after my money but they have ended up caving in and giving me my money when I’ve had a gambling slip and asked them for it.

My previous bank were utterly useless. It’s a very long story but in short, after repeatedly explaining to them about my gambling problems, they just ignored me and carried on automatically approving me for authorised overdrafts. (Their system reviews accounts every month or 2 and via an algorithm sets a max OD limit). It lead to complaints with them and then winning when it was referred to the ombudsman. My account was then downgraded to the very basic account with no overdraft facility.

The basic account had 2 cards…a cash only and top up debit. Meaning actually I could then take £600 out a day at cashpoints.

With the person looking after my money rarely able to say no to giving me some back, I did research and decided Monzo was the best for me.

So far, so good. Gambling block on, cashpoint withdrawals set to £30 a day and any excess money is put into the interest saving pot (which takes a day to withdraw of course, so is no good if I’ve got a sudden urge to gamble). Already I’m feeling much more positive and for the first time in years feel back in control.

you can also cap your daily card limit if you think this might be something that could help you

No benefits for using my Monzo card, no cashback or discounts

Out of interest, was this something Monzo set up for you after specifically asking in app? Not an option I had seen or heard about on here before

Glad that Monzo is proving a help. I think a lot of us feel more in control in our own ways

You can request lower card or atm limits by starting an in app chat

I am full Monzo myself, but the biggest problems I face myself are also the reasons I have found it hard to convince anyone else that going full Monzo is a good idea…

Picture and imagine the following points in conversation:

Them: It’s all through the app and there’s no branches, ok… But how do you pay money in?

Me: you can pay in any paypoint store… but no more than £1000. And it costs a quid per deposit

——————————

Them: What if you have more than £1000?

Me: You have to pay in £1000, wait 6 months, then you can pay in another £1000

——————————

Them: Can you pay in cheques?

Me: Oh yeah you can do that for free… but you have to post it to them. Freepost. So it could very well get lost. And it can take a week or more to get paid in.

——————-———-

Them: Can’t you pay in cash and cheques at the post office like most other banks?

Me: Nope

——————————

I love Monzo as a bank and I really want to evangelise about it, tell people all the great things it has and get other people on board, but it’s hard when I feel like convincing people to go full Monzo is actually potentially making their life harder. Paying in money is a very basic feature of a basic bank account and right now it’s an utter mess with Monzo!

Being fullmonzo is just having your salary paid in and bills out, not you pledge an allegiance solely to Monzo and close all other accounts.

Having a legacy and a Monzo is the best combo for dealing with cash/cheques whilst reaping the benefits of paid early, instant notifications and a nicer app than legacies.

The only convincing is to get out of the mindset that you can only have one bank at a time.

I agree it’s a mess with the insane limits on paying in and being charged to do so. Plus the travel atm charges over £200 in rolling 30 days is stingy.

This is why I recommend Monzo + Starling + Visa Legacy + Amex + Marcus is a nice setup.

I totally get that, I personally have a second account, and also I personally don’t mind paying a quid every time I need to deposit cash if I did want to deposit in Monzo, but I kinda felt the spirit of the original question was essentially ‘what is stopping **everyone ** going fullmonzo… and I can tell you right now that most people I know would view having a separate account just for deposits and other sundries as a total faff. Why have 2 accounts when you can just have 1? Yes you don’t get the new features that Monzo has… but at the rate the legacy banks are stealing Monzo’s features it’s only a matter of time before Monzo’s USP is gone and it’s just another bank - and a bank that charges you to deposit money at that!

I’ve held Monzo for a couple years now and I feel like the magic has already worn off. It felt fresh with the instant notifications, pending payments and freezing card and budgeting. I came from using Starling before and only switched as it didn’t have budgeting. These days the legacies like Barclays have got their act together and stepped it up.

I’m now struggling to find what I like about Monzo the new app is a mess, the chat is still a mess, loans are a mess, plus is a mess, the forums are a mess, depositing cash is a mess, cash abroad is stingy, categories for food/fuel from supermarkets are a mess, cheque imaging put on hold, interest rates are poor, no cashback rewards on DDs, no interest on balance. I’m sure there’s a ton more like how they’ve handled the SCA implementation by not pushing forward with app push to reset and setting the limit at £135. Too

I only mention Monzo if someone comments and really wants to know, not really worth trying to recruit new customers unless I’m earning a referral and monzo stopped that now that’s reached the fomo stage.

If you truly believe this what are you still doing here? Find yourself a new bank man, one that does the stuff exactly how you want/need it.
