When will Monzo support Apple Pay?

To be honest I think the thread should be locked again, we’re just going around in circles which leads to false hopes, anger and disappointment for everyone. :sob:

I’m genuinely bored of asking and now I don’t really care if it comes or not.

I also find the way that Monzo are handling this topic is rather bad considering that it’s the most sought after feature.

I don’t believe there is an NDA in place as I’ve been bound by them before and you can sometimes say if there is one in place.

It’s an Apple product so for them to stop you giving ‘free advertising’ to it by mentioning it doesn’t make sense.

Anyway I’m gonna mute any topics about this now.

You haven’t dealt with Apple then. I have (for a slightly different matter) and I can confirm they have draconian NDAs in place for just about anything. Some features that aren’t standard (like Apple Pay, or carrier profiles, or other stuff) require you to be part of their “cool kids club” and they are strict on making sure neither the rules of admission nor what happens inside that club leaks out.

Now, I wonder if these policies would open them up to anti-trust lawsuits though, as they’re essentially denying access to certain features for arbitrary reasons. The mobile payment system should offer a standard interface for any bank that wishes to use it, without Apple having a say in it.

Does this include saying anything along the lines of ‘sorry we’re legally not allowed to talk about it’? Genuinely curious.

No but as @anon87450436 just said something along the lines of that might have been better then what is being said now.

My NDA wasn’t like that but presumably there are some things which Apple doesn’t even want the public to know the existence of. Maybe the issue with the Apple Pay NDA is Apple doesn’t want anyone to make promises about the feature until the testing & certification is complete, as to not give out a bad experience should the feature be canned because it didn’t pass testing/certification.

Presumable Apple views “Apple Pay” as a selling point and does not want banks to use the term until they are actually certified for it. A formal announcement about Apple Pay being in the works would probably quality as a selling point and thus Apple wouldn’t like it.

It’s certainly possible, I can’t imagine Apple wanting a subpar Apple Pay experience with Monzo but i’d be surprised if this meant they couldn’t say ‘we’re working on this feature now’. I’d be curious as to why Monzo can’t say anything about this when Apple Pay is finally released

Barclays has BPay so probably won’t bother.

The OH has a Samsung and it constantly keeps trying to force the setup of the Samsung Pay app thing instead of just allowing GPay setup. It’s quite annoying!

Apple is famous for NDA’s covering everything from hardware development to the iOS Developer accounts. It’s hard to find official hard evidence of the Apple Pay NDA’s as we don’t have access to the Apple Pay agreemnts but here is an article about Apples negotiation with Australian banks.

Confidentiality agreements seen by Fairfax Media issued to banks and specifically covering Apple Pay negotiations, say the signatory “shall be directly liable for and shall indemnify and hold [the] discloser [Apple] harmless from and against any liabilities, losses, damages, costs and expenses, including reasonable attorney’s fees as incurred by any of them, resulting from or arising out of or in connection with any unauthorised disclosure or use of discloser’s confidential information by the recipient or any of its consultants”.

and the NDA doesn’t apply here because?..53

Because the card processor (GPS) has already been tested & certified, as opposed to Monzo? In any case I’m sure they consulted with Apple before publishing this, and Apple has given the OK.

Given that Starling were able to ask Apple if they could just let customers just -know- that they’re working on it, surely that’s a huge discrepancy regarding Monzo’s ‘transparency’- is it not?

Well maybe Monzo asked it too and Apple said no, most likely because as opposed to Starling, the Monzo processor is not yet certified or anything, so Apple wants to be safe and have the option to pull out of the deal without announcing anything, thus forcing Monzo to keep their mouth shut.

Had Starling asked, and got a negative response, there would not be a single mention of Apple Pay anywhere on their community. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they would’ve started censoring all speculation about it.

And this is still all just speculation

Starling also use GPS(?) Remember that card-crash fiasco that happened a while back?

I think you’re coming hell and high water to defend Monzo here, given that Apple Pay contradicts their ostensible ‘transparent’ ethos.

Starling also use GPS

Isn’t that my entire point? Starling is using a card processor that’s already been used with multiple Apple Pay compatible banks. It’s been tested & certified by them (clearly reliability isn’t part of the tests apparently :joy:) where as Monzo’s processor is brand new and unique.

Monzo are becoming processor accredited themselves to issue Apple Pay cards. Starling just use Apple Pay through GPS - using GPS’s processor accreditation.

Let me re-iterate my initial point without the defence speculation.
I believe that ‘no news’ goes against the transparency ethos, whereas we have seen the NDA not apply to Starling. We can make defences and speculate why they haven’t disclosed anything, but clearly the community have spoken and many are getting impatient.

Why should we continue to bank with a bank on the vague hope that we’re asking for something that might not come?

we have seen the NDA not apply to Starling

The NDA applied too, except the stage during which the NDA was in effect took much less time given that their processor was already certified. In :monzo:'s case, this stage is taking much longer as the processor is brand new.

Why should we continue to bank with a bank on the vague hope that we’re asking for something that might not come?

Because personally for me (and I guess for a lot more users), the Monzo product is good enough even with the lack of Apple Pay. Personally I work around that issue with “Boon by Wirecard”, a virtual prepaid card, and I guess some people who still have a legacy account can use that instead.

Nobody is forcing you to stick with :monzo: if you’re that offended by this lack of “transparency” though.
