What's currently the best adblocker?

I used to use ublock origin, but it was disabled from Chrome a month ago. Was quite reliable at blocking ads on Prime Vid, Youtube etc.

What’s the best ad blocker now? Tempted just to switch browser

uBlock Origin Lite: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin-lite/ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfh?hl=en-GB

Made by the same guy as uBlock Origin. Works a bit differently but seems just as good, only thing it wasn’t doing was YouTube ads (that was a constant game of whack-a-mole anyway) but I relented and subscribed to Premium Lite to avoid that.

Otherwise, this new extension seems to be just as good as the old one was.

I tried using Brave but I always get a cookie error on YouTube for some reason so can’t access it.

Yeah if you aren’t using custom filter lists or some of the other advanced per site settings then lite works great, if there’s annoying blank spaces where ads were you can try move the slider on the extension up to max.

By custom filter lists I mean you can still disable the adblocker on a per site basis and it will remember, just importing a custom block list doesn’t work.

Thanks I’ll give that a try

This is my current belt & braces extension list - using Vivaldi which has it’s own blocking in place too.

You can test your adblocking here: https://adblock.turtlecute.org - I’m 99%

oh wow that’s a lot!

I used to use bypass paywalls as well - sadly looks like it has unsurprisingly been removed from github, but used to basically just let you read any NYT / FT articles etc without issue.

New York Times website using Reader mode in Vivaldi for Android. :slightly_smiling_face:

Never heard of that browser. I just downloaded on Mac - can’t see the ‘reading mode’ though

It’s not on every site. It’s in settings. I’m on Windows/Android so I don’t know what Apple does to it.

Actually I just found it, and seems to work (minus some styling). Nice one, thanks

I use Adguard on Safari for Mac, iPad and iOS with no issues. Also for Firefox on Mac.

If you configure all the filters properly, it does a good job.

There are some stubborn sites where I have to enable Adblock plus too. But Adguard does most of the job.

On top of it I also do DNS adblocking with NextDNS.

Edit: typo

colour me confused

Sorry that was a typo.

I couldn’t get Vivaldi to work on FT - but chatgpt kindly provided me the code for a Chrome extension that rewrites the referer as ‘google.com’ and now happily browsing the site. Kind of surprised how little they do to paywall their site

my current setup is to use pihole on the network and vivaldi browser

ControlD DNS on the router and all devices, mobile and otherwise, with various options enabled can block pretty much all ads at DNS level.

Firefox with uBlock Origin (the good one, as it still works on FF) takes care of any shrapnel that might have come through.

I have ControlD, but don’t use it other than for F1, as it seems to add latency. Might be my imagination

I didn’t realise that this had finally launched in the UK. I watch enough YouTube for it to be worth it, but I really don’t care for the other features of Premium. I’ve downgraded.

Yeah I noticed it a month or two ago. I objected on principle to paying for full Premium as I didn’t want YouTube Music - people say it’s great and I’m sure it is but I already have Apple Music and didn’t want to be forced to pay for another service I wouldn’t use. And Premium is as expensive as Disney+. I don’t know why it took so long to simply have an ad-free plan. It’s still a touch more than I hoped, but it has been worth it on mobile.

I use Adguard on both windows and android then brave browser. Blocks most ads, trackers, general annoyances like cookie consent pop ups. Worth a look
