What should you never cheap out on?

Accessories like mice, keyboards and monitors. If you get them cheap, they’ll break and you’ll end up spending more on replacing them, it’s worth the investment because the good ones will last you years.

True, I had forgot about it still being there at city. Plus 2x2 vs 3x3.

Why do you sleep on the floor?

I’ve found that the PortaPow cables are at a great quality/price point for me. I use them both as my normal at home charging cable and my travel battery charging cable.

A shitty monitor/TV can give you eyestrain, annoy you by flickering or by not accurately displaying colours/dark levels, and be a generally unpleasant viewing experience. For that reason I’d never cheap out on a TV (and cry when people think going to a supermarket and getting a 65" HDTV for £299 is a good idea).

With mice, I wouldn’t cheap out on one not because I worry about it breaking, but because cheap ones invariably have poor ergonomics and can cause or contribute to chronic strain injuries. This is something I’m very aware of as many people my age got RSI from mouse use before it was widely known.

I 100% agree with you! A lot of people will say that a cheap mouse does the same thing as an expensive one, but they’re forgetting about the ergonomic design for sure. I recently got myself a vertical angled mouse and I’ll never go back.

Anything you use on a daily basis.

This isn’t to say that low cost things can’t be good, just don’t cheap out on things.

As for a solid recommendation on things to never cheap out on, power supplies and power cables are what I keep telling people. :electric_plug:

Depends on how well you tolerate house fires, I guess.

Isn’t there some merit to slow charging anyway i.e. prolonged battery life?

Speakers & headphones

Bose in ear headphones are amazing! I’ve had 3 pairs last ~10 years between them :ok_hand: I don’t know exactly where they are but the first 2 pairs were still working when I last checked! The cable coating began to degrade and split so I stopped using them so they didn’t die completely :see_no_evil:

Got some Sony MDR-100ABN’s which will have been going strong for 3 years on the 31st :tada: the headband has cracked (common fault) but the quality is wicked, the noise cancelling is spot on and the battery life is still excellent :zap:

100% agreed on speakers. Can’t live without decent speakers.

Still enjoying the Google Home Max? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I keep eyeing up a second but I have no idea where I’d put it  Suppose I don’t need a microwave :smirk:

Yeah, the Max sounds absolutely incredible. I’ve now got full multi-room audio with a great speaker as the centre-piece. Home Max in the living room, Home in the bedroom, Home Hub in the kitchen, Home Mini’s in the hallways :joy:

I can’t justify a second Max at the moment although the idea of a stereo pair is very tempting.

I think it’s too easy to say “don’t buy cheap products”. Of course some people can’t afford Gucci suites.

Personally I learned that it’s always good to go a little bit further when you still pay for quality and not a brand or trademark. To me there’s always a limit to what a piece of clothing, or electronics is actually worth.

Also, sometimes it’s difficult to spend big one time than buy few things with lower price tag even if it adds up more in the end.

Currently I go to zero-waste shops, I buy at vegan brands only, when I need something I know I will need for my travel - I will go to NorthFace not Primark.

When buying headphones I did invest in Sony because while travelling I used to buy ~20 quid ones but that’s because I couldn’t afford.

In general I developed this scanner where I know how much I can pay based on quality and would never go beyond that… so far it has worked perfectly

Lovely

Rocking the Home Max in the living room, Sony SRS-X88 in the bedroom and then a Sony SRS-HG1 floating around.

Would be fab to get another Max to go somewhere but might be more sensible to throw a regular Home in the kitchen :sunglasses: I don’t think I could fit anything else in haha - Home Hub would be pretty sweet though, I imagine :ok_hand:

Bed frame and mattress. I love time spent in bed and want to enjoy it while I’m there. Just got rid of a bed frame after over 25 years (7 inch platform was fine in my 20s, not so much in my 50s), still as good as the day I bought it (not the original mattress). Replaced it with another (higher) one, also solid maple, from the same company which I expect to last until they put me in a box and set fire to me.

https://www.naturalbedcompany.co.uk/ if anyone is in the market, and no I’m not on commission

For me shoes and any work gear, why not make your work more comfortable and easier for a couple of hundred quid a year.

Also companies that skimp on core equipment, like what are they even playing at, downtime costs a day more than the upgrade to military grade equipment and they still are stingy.
