My best moment is hopefully in the future when you IPO!
My favourite time was when Monzo turned 9 and @rossmonzo and @AlanDoe both released a new feature for us all to get excited about. I can’t remember which feature it was now but something great. I just remember it was around 4pm on a Friday.
9 years, a long way Monzo has come!
I recall Tom explaining the concept in a video for the very first crowdfunding. Then Crowdcube broke and it became to me this was going to be a thing. Mind you, this was at a time were banks were just banks and in my perspective I wasn’t expecting any really modern stuff in that area.
Counting down to the moment when all the temporary cards were replaced by the proper accounts. Most have been a daunting task, but also a useful one as the initial cards were losing quite a bit of money if I recall correctly.
Oh and as a bonus: visiting a conference and seeing someone from the Monzo staff on the speaker list! Even got to have a little chat (and stickers) afterwards.
Good times. I especially liked being invited to be one of the first testers of the feature.
Two moments made me particularly happy:
Flex, the level of control and integration is amazing.
Investments, I like that it is simple and the choices limited as this suits my purposes. Other apps exist that allow for more complex investment strategies (e.g. Freetrade etc.)
Cake? I like an old fashioned cream and jam filled sponge.
The launch of joint accounts…
My favourite memory is arriving in their offers for the Alpha launch where each card was set up manually. Giant stacks of coral Mondo cards. Quickly followed by immediately going to Tesco to buy gum to test the instant notifications. It was so novel at the time!
Probably attending the rebranding meet up from Mondo to Monzo and then second to having to physically go to Monzo HQ to collect the first current account debit cards… was a crazy different Monzo back then!

Happy birthday Monzo! ![]()
The day of the two hour outage before the pandemic was fairly notable on here, but the day that @simonb floated the first images of the committed spending pots was a real highlight both here and more generally
Was this July 2017? I think that was the date?
Happy birthday! I can scarcely believe you’re almost into the double digits already. It still feels only an eyeblink thatbibwas in NY with a bunch of friends discovering that throwing all their Mondo cards on to the table to pay for dinner didn’t work terribly well when none of the cards had names on them, while I had to pay with my Lloyds card (and subsequently sulk at discovering Android users were not yet supported and had to sign up for a waiting list).
There have been a lot of moments over the years, but if I had to single out one particular moment above all others, it would be the one where Monzo went from being a prepaid card to being a fully fledged back account. Lots of huge things since, but that’s probably still the defining moment for me.
I adore coffee cake. Coffee cake is the best cake ever and I could eat the heck out of it. But for a birthday? You can’t beat the classic Victoria sponge with buttercream icing (and strawberry jam).
Happy birthday Monzo!
I also do love a coffee & walnut cake, but really any cake is good. I’m not too fussy.
I think my favourite Monzo moment probably has to be Dark Mode being launched! ![]()
@HoldenCarver makes a good point that prepaid to current accounts was also such a major moment. I’d probably consider that more of a “significant event”, with implications for everyone, than something that was specifically a favourite moment for me. I do remember it being very exciting though!
Apple Pay launching, too, was huge, and a big event here on the Community.
Favourite moment was getting shares in those frantic 90 seconds in R1!
Happy Birthday! I think the highlights have to be the neon cards and Flex.
Cake? Chocolate - triple, quadruple, as many uples as possible ![]()
Vegan, nut and gluten free cake! Then everyone can have some.
I’m a late comer, so Top it with a coral card for good measure ![]()
Haha, no idea what happened there - I was replying to @coffeemadman, must have been my fat fingers! ![]()
It might have been! It’s so long ago now I can’t recall… just recall the excitement of Monzo and how refreshing it was.
Fond memories of the spending graph (which I always liked) and the full scrollable transaction homepage. Simpler times.
Is the actual birthday today or tomorrow?
