We’re improving international transfers, powered by Wise 🌍

Not on Wise they don’t seem to be - 28 cents minimum charge. I’ve just tried a Euro to Euro transfer to my Bunq and Fineco accounts via SEPA using their Dutch and Italian IBANs and in both cases, Wise want 28 cents.

:grimacing:

Regardless EU law that SEPA payments must be fee free :face_with_monocle:, businesses may find the way to change for the service :camel:

As far as I’m aware, the law actually says that the cost of a cross-border payment must be no more than a corresponding domestic payment, not that it must actually be free.

I agree that wording does have its impact

Eg in Lithuania :lithuania: all domestic :euro: are fee free maybe different now as my records are a few years old so it says there "all :euro: payments must be fee free… " :face_with_monocle::nerd_face:

UK domestic transfers are free

Italian domestic transfers are free.

It seems at first sight that Wise are ripping us off.

The regulation doesn’t apply to payments from the UK because it is not in the EU.

When I setup a domestic transfer from my Wise GBP balance to a UK bank account I see a 0.32 GBP fixed fee.

Which is presumably why when I then tried to transfer Euros from Monzo and Wise to my Dutch bank Euro account to the Fineco one (neither touching the UK) they STILL wanted to charge me ?

And when I transfer from my (UK) Revolut or Starling account to Fineco, or Bunq, neither of them charge me?

I feel like we’re talking about different things. Originally I was just disputing the claim that SEPA payments must be fee free under EU law  as long as Wise charges the same 28 cents fee for all euro payments in the EU, it does not violate the relevant regulation. It doesn’t matter what other providers choose to charge.

I’m not weighing in on whether or not Wise’s fee of 28 cents is a (legal) rip-off.

I posted yesterday but as I’m new posts were awaiting approval and seem to have disappeared! So apologies if they appear and some of this is duplicated.

The main issue for me as someone who has been using the international transfer through Monzo regularly for a few years, is that Monzo have increased the fee they charge for providing exactly the same service they have always done (at least that’s how it appears) and not been clear about the price increase.

It would be useful for @jackcully or someone at Monzo to clarify the matter on how it works (as there’s a lot of speculation in this thread) and specifically why the change/increase in fee for what appears to be the same service as before.

It’s up to Monzo if they want to charge the higher price or even respond, but I also think it’s perfectly valid for people to bring it up here especially as they haven’t been clear about the price increase. For me it will work out costing anywhere from £1 to £3+ extra per transaction so I’ll be using Wise directly in future unless there is an option to use the low cost method in Monzo. And a someone who hasn’t used Wise directly before, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I have an account with them already by virtue of using it through Monzo so that makes going direct easier

In the latest app teardown I noticed this correction in the wording (it’s a before and after). Maybe this helps with some of the confusion here :man_shrugging:

<string name="transaction_international_bank_transfer_fee">Wise fast and easy fee</string>
<string name="transaction_international_bank_transfer_fee">Fast and easy fee</string>

How to DM @jackcully as I want to try international transfers inside Monzo?

I think it’s been rolled out to everyone now

Anyone have issues with saved payees?

My American fiancée is a saved payee and I have previously sent her over a number of payments but tried today and I get the following message “We cannot currently accept payments to this recipient.”

Used this for the first time this week, and was very seamless and convenient. As it was used for holiday accommodation, it was a shame though that this transaction couldn’t be added to the ‘shared tab’ like other transactions.

@anon31126576 , your post is probably more suited to here.

Can’t see that in my app

Not that I ever send international payments

Monzo love a slow rollout, they should play hard and fast

Just thinking that it’s probably better suited to the plus/premium offers thread :man_facepalming::man_shrugging:
