Hello, I’ve just created my account and I’m planning to move many transactions and saving from my Revolut virtual card to Monzo. But now… after got my account, I have to sit around for a week and wait for a physical card to be delivered, all I need is a virtual card. I don’t need a disposable card, which is also available from Revolut, though there are good reasons for having the option.
For me, a physical card is a waste of time, it is a waste of money, and I might change my mind and go back to Revolut before I actually get to spend any money. I may not even use the physical card when I get it, I just need the payment details. I can also use virtual cards at a brick and mortar store by using the Curve card.
When your card arrives just stick it in a drawer then? I’m not sure I understand what the issue is
You don’t have to wait for your physical card to arrive before you can start spending on it. Simply add it to Google/Apple Pay
I’d love to not have a physical card too but so many places still don’t accept contactless and then there are transaction limits imposed by some too This is nothing specific to Monzo.
How do I use Google/Apple Pay with an online service?
As far as I’ve seen, that is never an option. I’ve just tried and found “Apple Pay is only available for use via supported Apps and devices. Please select an alternative payment method.”
The normal virtual cards are free with Revolut but it just works as a standard card they don’t offer any added protection. The disposable virtual cards which sounds like what are described in the Monzo Plus post are part of the premium/metal package on Revolut.
If a website supports Apple Pay it’ll just show up. Or they’ll say it.
Otherwise you can copy and paste your card number from the monzo app to what ever online merchant you need to pay on. Or, add your card details to something like Dashlane, onepassword or the saved credit are section of safari which is under “auto fill”. That way you have the option of your phone asking you if you want to auto fill card details when it sees the option to.
The protection that the virtual card offer in Revolut’s normal account is that they can be used once and easily replaced if required, ideal for one-off payments for online stores etc giving a greater level of security
I really hope this is still being considered / worked on; it seems like such a shoo-in ‘killer app’ for giving customers power over trash subscriptions like gym memberships as well as being a security boon that no other consumer-level UK bank accounts (apart from Revolut premium) seem to offer, as far as I can tell?
As much as I obviously hope this ends up happening and being offered to all Monzo customers, being able to create virtual credit cards is a feature I’d consider getting Monzo Plus for, especially if it included good management features others have mentioned (auto-deletion after a certain time, pre-set spending limits, etc)
Edit: Apparently this is already listed in the 2019 Monzo Plus roadmap and I didn’t notice until after I posted this, so that’s promising.
I completely agree, this would be a huge deal fro me and I think I’d consider signing up to Monzo Plus for this alone.
Being able to protect yourself from unwanted/repeated payments from third parties is a game changer and I would rather not go with Revolut, it’s a shame they’re the only ones who seem to offer this in the U.K.
That might also solve problem how to attach card payments like Netflix to pots. Monzo could generate card number per payment what would allow to easly attach them to pots. This way even if amout or transaction merchant will change, it will still be attached to right pot, since it would have invidual card number.
