Using Monzo everywhere: improving merchant acceptance

I was in the States earlier this year. I bought stuff on the airline (they had a funky self serve magstripe swipe thing) and purchased stuff which the shops/restaurants swiped the card for - everything went through and I never enabled magstripe ATMs…

Sorry about this, I was wrong about the magstripe toggle! It does just apply to ATMs, but this hasn’t always been the case, so forgive me!

I’m not entirely sure why this declined :thinking: If you want to send me over a direct message, I can have a proper look into it though!

If you are going away for a long time, you can just get in touch with customer support in the app and they can extend this for you :blush:

Hi Louis, I can’t actually find a record of the exchange I had with Monzo. It was definitely around 1 April this year, and I’m pretty sure it was in writing. If it’s not in my forum inbox or in my chats, can you think of anywhere else it might be?

I haven’t had any in-person payment issues, but I have had bizzare issues with online payments via Stripe: every other month Patreon payments will fail and block the card, and need to be manually re-enabled by Patreon support, and one payment via Backerkit failed completely and could not be pushed through by Backerkit or Stripe themselves (was throwing a transaction_not_allowed error on the merchant side, but no transaction requests ever hit the Monzo network). Stripe swore up and down it was not a problem on their end, and I eventually had to give up and set up a side channel to pay via Paypal.
Already reported in-app to the COps so hopefully there’s a record of it somewhere in case stripe start mucking about again.

Every time I try to set up Virgin money credit card repayment direct debit, it never seems to work and I get failed payment charges form virgin.

Every other direct I have has set up perfectly and i get a notification saying a new direct debit has been setup, just not for virgin money ever and I’ve tried at least 6-7 times.

Hey Hamza, have you tried raising this issue through the in-app chat/help? The Monzo guys should be able to look at your account directly that way and/or chase it up with Virgin. Hope it gets sorted!

My friend couldn’t use his Monzo card on an EasyJet flight on Thursday - said they don’t accept…

Easyjet transactions. I used my Monzo OK on Outgoing flight Sunday 3rd June, on APP transaction shows as delayed by 2 days. I attempted to use my card on return flight Thursday 7th June, the flight attendant was just about to process the payment, but the flight manager saw the card & would not let me use it, she said Monzo cards are not accepted.

I’ve no idea if this has worked or not, or if the crew on my flight this morning weren’t aware of easyJet’s policy, but they accepted my Monzo card without a murmur. :+1:

Has anybody else had an issue with using their card onboard TUI Airways?

Both recent flights the transaction has failed, showing “card blocked or expired” on the crews iPad. The card is almost brand new, I’ve never used it on an aeroplane before… Seems a bit strange?

My friend claims he used his with no problem at all on a TUI flight. My card works fine on Ryanair!

I’m flying with TUI this summer. Hopefully it will be working. I’ll report back if I have any issues.

Interesting read. So occasionally a card payment may be declined due to their systems not being updated .
What about bank transfers ?

Bank transfers are a different story and it’s completely separate from cards, and nowadays it’s fine - even most legacy institutions updated their sort code validation lists so you should be good to go!

For those who have had monzo declined in the UK could you share where it was ?
I shop at Asda usually and its accepted there. What about Aldi/Lidl ?

Never had a Monzo card decline personally (other than me being stupid and spending all my money).

There have been previous issues where crappy software (like at train ticket vending machines) used to crash but firmware updates have been released (and the original developers fired, I hope).

Nowadays the only remaining issue are a few idiots that refuse to take the card (in breach of MasterCard guidelines) because of a prior bad experience (chargeback?), but thankfully it’s more than easy to walk out and take your business to the competition next door.
