So I caved and downloaded and signed up for iplayer the other day because of the buzz around this show. It’s 100% justified. I love it. Just finished episode 3 so I’ll give my thoughts so far. Most do seem really nice, but good grief not John.
thoughts (spoilers from episode 3)
I just got to what I’m gonna call the Aaron episode
where they all picked on him, and John seemed really lovely at first but I always got the vibe that he was one of those stereotypical up tight gay guys, and it’s not a personality type I get on with at all. The way he treated Aaron in that episode really solidified my dislike for him, and I don’t find him very nice at all now. The way he spoke to him and treated him was just vile. I’m now rooting for the traitors to put him on trial and then off him. See how he likes it. I really feel for Aaron, he seems lovely and didn’t deserve to be treated like that at all.
I think Maddie is gonna start getting on my nerves too. I’m also not keen on Wilf. Don’t trust him at all and he’s definitely gonna turn on his fellow traitors to try to save himself if his name continues to come up.
Amanda is my favourite of the entire group right now and I’m rooting for the traitors. Tom and Alex make the whole thing really interesting too. Alex especially is probably going to get really good as the group gets smaller if they don’t kill her soon. She’s sharp as a tack.
Glad you are enjoying it. Everyone I have recommended it to is hooked now. Pleased they have renewed it for season 2 already. Hoping they manage to keep the concept fresh next season. I feel that what works really well is the twists and rug pulls. I feel like no two episodes are the same, unlike say The Apprentice, where although the tasks are different there aren’t many surprises.
In other news I tried to watch Tokyo Vice, but I gave up after two episodes. The story seems good but it really stinks so bad of white saviour complex I couldn’t carry on.
I thought Theo was going to annoy me when he was introduced in the first episode, and I thought John was great.
Unsurprisingly, as we got to know them and their personalities as presented on the show shone through, my opinions did a full 180. Theo is a pure treasure, and John was a bitter old queen.
Spoilers to last episode, when Theo last night said he had learned he could feel accepted, that really shocked me. I’d assumed people that age knew that / had more confidence given the state of the world, it was a bit upsetting to hear someone still saying they didn’t know or felt like it wasn’t the case that being a gay person is fully accepted by most people
Wasn’t expecting Tom to joust oust him and Alex like that! Poor Matt. But that was very entertaining to watch. Their choices caused so much unexpected chaos. I think that’s sealed their fate now.
The smart play now would be to kill John, which is what I hope they do. That’ll throw more sus towards Tom and Alex, and I can see both of them going tomorrow, one murdered, the other banished.
Maddie is definitely starting to annoy, to the point where if I was a faithful I’d want her banished regardless. Her approach is either sus or sabotage whether intentional or not. I mean she’s not wrong with Wilfred, but how she arrived at that conclusion is just totally wacko.
I’m hooked though. Wonder how long Amanda will last undetected, but I love her. Will is probably gonna be the first to go, but can totally see him sabotaging the other imposters in the process. I hate on Among us when one of them gets caught and they just rat out the others, and I definitely get those vibes from him.
So many people I know in person have slowly started getting really into it, much like here. It’s getting over two million viewers minimum live. Total ratings including on demand in a month or so will be interesting to see when released. Three minutes to go…
Episode 9 talk: Yeah, Amanda has definitely drawn attention to herself. Anything that makes people go WTF can’t be a good thing! Kind of hoping Wilf goes for her but it backfires and she wins.
I am a few episodes behind. but am loving The Traitors so far! I don’t watch much reality TV but this one is just a lot of fun! It is really good to see them all work together in the missions but then turn on each other as they get to the round table. Unlike some reality shows, it is more about the game itself than the people which just makes it a whole lot more interesting.
I really don’t know what tactics I would use if I was on it. Anything the faithful do seems to turn at least one faithful against them. Too forceful and you are clearly throwing people under the bus so are a traitor, but too quiet and you are clearly hiding away so are a traitor. Makes you question what tactics people would end up using if it returns for a 2nd series*.
Claudia is also a brilliant choice of host for this. I really can’t pin on the reason why, but she does balance the serious and the kinda absurd nature of the show (i.e. talking about murder as if it is an everyday action like having breakfast) really well.
*which it should. The response to it has been very positive and the viewing figures have been increasing across the series which is rare for many shows nowadays. Airing outside of the World Cup would probably help as well.
Totally agree. Not sure if I saw it mentioned here or somewhere else online but it is like she’s channelling her inner Yvette Fielding and it’s the perfect persona for this sort of show.
Already renewed for a second season apparently! And there are American and Australian spin offs! And there’s also the Dutch original. All of which I intend to watch now. There’s also The Mole on Netflix which kinda scratches the same itch this show does. I watched that before starting this and thought it was also fantastic. The Traitors is so much better though.
Cancelled my Mario kart plans for the weekend to group up with some friends to give this mode a try instead!
Figured it out. Make sure there’s at least 6 of you joining and you’ll get straight in. If less than 6, it looks like you need to do one of the most impossible challenges ever. But you don’t if 6+
As others have noted, Amanda done fucked up tonight. Got herself so distracted by the game playing that she forgot the golden rule of ‘keep your lies consistent’. If you’re really a faithful, you don’t call someone your 100% one night and then target them not 24 hours later. Everyone clearly noticed that and she’s given herself a mountain to climb.
Research!
Wilf said something curious tonight. He said he was a herd follower and had never stuck his neck out to target someone before. Which didn’t quite line up with him turning on Alyssa out of nowhere. As it happened, a tweet by Ivan had been retweeted into my timeline earlier today, so I ended up going down a rabbithole of ex-Traitors cast tweets which led to finding Rayan’s Twitter account and a stunning revelation.
Behind-the-scenes spoilers:
What Rayan revealed was that in the episode with the church task, he’d been goofing around with Alyssa and doing imitations of Claudia. And Alyssa did one where she said “Hello Traitors”. Immediately shat it when realising what she’d done, and Rayan had told everyone about it. But it wasn’t broadcast (may not have been caught on camera) and the only reference left in the show was Tom “I’m talking to the traitor” in the car. Puts a completely different spin on Wilf turning at the round table, and explains why Alyssa’s gsmeplay went to pot as I observed earlier - having put her foot in it, she was clearly too scared to be more outspoken lest she put her foot in it again or give others a clear opportunity to attack her directly. Mind-blowing.
I think I love this show and can’t remember the last time I was so invested in a television competition like this. Maybe the very first series of Hunted before it was apparently how incredibly contrived it was.
