Issue: The last two payments I made have resulted in scheduled monthly payments for what should have been one off purchases. I was notified of the repeating subscription payment and was able to turn off the subscription but since neither of these purchases was advertised as, or intended to be, a recurring payment this should not have been added to the recurring scheduled payments.

Thatâs because naturally they are subscription based services therefore the monzo app will trigger them as such for your convenience.
Youâve already changed the repeating payment to no so youâll be fine, as long as youâve checked your PSN and Telegraph accounts to make sure they arenât subscriptions set up/auto renewal turned off.
Thank you Carlo. Although both of these merchants offer subscriptions, in this case these purchases were single, one off purchases, so itâs incorrect for Monzo to list them as monthly recurring payments.
Do you know what would have happened if Iâd left these active for the month? Would I have been charged incorrectly, or is it more of a prediction based on expected payments?
Itâs just for things like the left to spend/budgeting features. The payments wouldnât have been taken again

General users will buy from these merchants and have an active monthly subscription. Itâs not ideal in your situation, but it does make it convenient for many many others.
Your purchase was a one off but thereâs no way for monzo to understand that because the authorisation doesnât stipulate either way.
No payment would have been taken, monzo would just notify you it believes a payment may be due, but youâve resolved that by changing repeating payment to no.
Same goes for mobile phone top ups, Sky TV, one off purchase from O2 - these are naturally subscribe and monthly payment services.
Itâs just how monzo works, they could ask I guess but that could be inconvenient to more customers than those who are making one off payments to subscription based services.

Itâs likely Playstation uses the same payment system to process both monthly subscriptions and one-off purchases, so there is no way for Monzo to know which one it is. As itâs more likely to be a subscription than a 1 off payment , they default to a recurring subscription. Same goes for The Telegraph.
Having it set to a subscription in Monzo doesnât mean money will be taken. The merchant still has to request it when they want it, just like they would for another bank. Monzo would just use the fact its set to a subscription to help calculate âLeft to payâ and trends.
