Can’t you just pull down the arrow while on your personal account to see your total balance?
By running balance i mean when you buy something it tells you on the transaction feed what your balance was at the time that purchase was made after the pending purchse has been deducted if that makes sense
Oh, I’m with you. I used the Budget feature to work out what I’ve got left. But I can see why people would prefer a running balance
Having both would be really good
Dune, voted, thank you
Thanks. I know it’s possible with that work round but it’s embarrassing that this is easier on HSBC and their web product and app are… terrible.
Agree with you on the HSBC app being terrible - and in my opinion, the current version is light-years ahead of where it was just 3-4 years ago! Back then it was really terrible.
If you look at how the HSBC app displays the transaction amount and the running total at that point, it can’t be hard for Monzo to display two similar amounts. The big question is if the app has access to the calculated running total, but it must be available somewhere if a downloaded statement shows it immediately.
The Monzo app should provide the choice to show either the daily spending (as it does now in the dated header) - OR - the running account balance. For me, the running account balance would be of more use because the current iteration shows only spending and doesn’t take into account any income during that day.
It’s a bit
Anyway, I also voted for the running balance display a while ago
Oddly it was Revolute getting rid of the running balance graph that made me finally get a Monzo account a while back, only to find they had gotten rid of it too… wtf…
I don’t get it… If I recall my uni archaeology class correctly, ledgers with a column for running balances are some of the oldest documents known of in human history… it’s a standard that’s older than most religions. Why get rid of it now?
Umm, it’s been gone from the app for a while now. Well over a year, I’m sure.
I’m guessing association with a spending card when it’s now a bank, but that’s just my feeling on the matter
It’s probably why the OP has only just noticed ![]()
Wouldn’t that more imply a running balance is useful? All my banks have running balances on the apps and statements and the practice is almost (if not literally) pre-historic. Removing it now makes no sense, yet both Revolute and Monzo did this about a year ago and I don’t see why
It has been gone for over a year. It surely can’t have been that useful to you if you’ve only just noticed it is missing?
All the more reason to question everything and shake things up. If Monzo copied off everyone else then it wouldn’t be a challenger bank ![]()
I use Monzo for everything. I get notifications, I regularly check and categorise my spending and I can see it all neatly organised in summary. So for me, there is no need to see a daily total because Monzo makes it effortless to keep on top of your finances. Perhaps this is why they chose to get rid of it? ![]()
The feeling I got was that current balance after every transaction made more sense, and fitted better with, a case of it being basically a token you charged up and then ran down
With it being a “proper” bank I’ve got money coming and going all the time (more going!) and so it’s more important to see the flow than the value
Personally happy to see it return though, if only because a fair few people want it
Whilst it is refreshing that the likes of Monzo have shaken things up, it’s not necessary to throw the baby out with the bath water.
The contributor makes a good point. The running balance is an established part of record keeping.
We admire the unfaltering championing of Monzo but accepting what they do without maintaining an objective mindset is irrational.
I wouldn’t go that far
It’s just a plausible explanation as to why there isn’t one
Something the OP might not be aware of because they don’t use their account often.
Ah, ok. Fair enough.
A running balance?
Whether or not it’s an active budgeting tool, I don’t know. So much is claimed in the name of budgeting that I’d tread warily.
But as an aid to getting a sense of in/out flow it’s a good ‘un. Certainly has been useful as an indicator of fluctuation by time.
So for me, why not? Just have it RBS-style and slide it in and out as required, saving screen space.
Because I only recently actually started using Monzo. I’ve mostly relied on my other cards. When I switched from Revolute, I was of the impression from some screenshots that Monzo still had it, but I found they were old.
Contrary to your implication a running balance saves me hours of book keeping when I need to track down the reason for spending habit changes that are not reflected in the graphs.
This doesn’t apply here. It’s great that you get notifications etc but I had that already from my American bank. I like that Monzo introduced the UK to spending categorization on a broader front but there are tools that unite all your financial accounts in one placce and do just that already (I’ve used one in the states for about a decade now and there is an equiv here though it’s not as good).
The graphs and summaries do not cover everything when you have multiple people paying into an account at different times a fiscal month that does not align with tri monthly bills and etc. It’s actually much easier to just have a running balance and be able to see the day to day changes in balance.
That makes sense, but i use it primarily for auditing and find that with it I can intuit trends that are not always reflected in charts because I know the habits and moods of myself and those on the joint account.
