The new interface has no running sum / account balance

I hope it will and that is why I wrote that initial message.
I went through the full topic and thought that another point of view could be helpful to understand how the feature can be used and why it can be important for some users.

Moreover on the part you have quoted. The feature itself (exporting statements) is then not used for its intent but as a workaround for something else. That does sound wrong.

A lot of posts here discussing but I think it best to post a picture of what OP meant:

For anyone new to the app, you used to have a graph at the top that showed your account balance as it goes up and down throughout the month, and as you scrolled up and down the transactions it would scroll left and right across the graph. This way you could scroll back to a specific day and see what your balance was. I believe it also projected future spending onto a more transparent line as well (as seen in the image above.

I’d love for that to come back really, it was really useful.

That graph is one of the reasons I went with Monzo. The ability to look back and see exactly what was happening at a given point in time.

Removing it is a huge problem for me since I can’t keep a check on what was in my account before each transaction and therefore no way of catching any mistakes. Ok I could export a statement, but seriously, if that had been the case when I joined Monzo, I’d have gone elsewhere, it’s cumbersome and time consuming.

Since the script for this was already written, why can’t we get an option to choose which we want ?

To answer the narrow point of the question, the short answer is that it’s because two different things cost twice as much to maintain as one. Every change that they may want to make going forward would need to be assessed against (and adjusted for) the interface-with-a-graph and the interface-without-a-graph and that just adds cost to the business.

Hi All,

I use Monzo as a budgeting tool.
I transfer over my spare ‘spending money’ to the account each week or month (depending on if I have a large upcoming expense which will blow through a one week budget.

The benefit of the running balance from the deprecated graph functionality for me was that I could easily track how much I’d spent over any given period through a simple mental arithmetic of the opening balance of that period and the closing balance of that period.

I could easily see how much I spent over a weekend away, for instance - or ensure that my current rate of ‘usual’ spending will leave me with enough money to pay for an upcoming mid month transaction (say heading for a nice dinner) and still have enough left for more ‘usual’ spending in the remaining weeks until I am paid and my budget starts over again.

I’m now instead tallying up daily spend amounts to work out my spend during a period which can then require a physical calculator in front of you, or continually flipping between the calculator app and Monzo on your phone.

My suggestion is for users to be able
to click each ‘day’ heading in the transactions and be able to see an opening and closing balance for that day.

Thanks.

Really hope this feature comes back. As someone said above it helps keep track of your money and you can scroll back through and easily spot any discrepancies. I was recently charged twice for a haircut as the original payment was presumed declined but I was easily able to spot this scrolling through my balance and seeing when I was deducted by a certain amount. The current layout and design is absolutely hopeless for this. I would have to add up all my transactions and go through every single payment. Or export my expenditures. Not exactly innovative.

As already said, whether you use it or not (I do along with many others), every bank offers this on their apps. It’s a massive backwards step for Monzo. It took you long enough to put back the overall balance at the top with the new update. Please bring this option back too. I don’t care for a total amount each day. I need rolling transactions showing the balance going up and down.

Actually, two years ago, it did kind of show a running balance…as you scrolled down the entries, the balance shown at the top the screen changed to reflect the balance at that date.

That’s what makes the software update so galling for me…they had a kind of running balance and then took it away.

Yes, I know that. I was a Mondo beta customer. :+1:

I was talking specifically about a running balance column as one might expect on a statement.

Ah, OK.

It is very poor design, from a user perspective. It took me 7 taps on my screen to pull up a PDF of my current statement…far too many for something I would regularly. From a coding perspective, it would be really simple to change that to a single tap from the main screen. It galls me that it had something I used regularly and took it away.

I am probably being cheeky, but do you know if any of the other challenger banks’ apps have the feature?

Hate to be that guy, but from an initial app launch, it’s 4 clicks max to get to a statement(iOS anyway)

Having said that, how many clicks is irrelevant because you shouldn’t have to use a statement to see it anyway, I would be very surprised if Monzo don’t add a running balance soon.

No problem with you being that guy, but I went through the process just before I posted…it was 7, on Android.

And to be honest, 4 clicks is too many for something (running balance) I used very regularly and which was available previously without clicks. And I have two legacy bank apps, one gives running balance on a single click (Coop) and the other displays it with no clicks (Nationwide). Monzo, as a challenger bank, is suppose to be progressive, but in this context, is actually regressive.

“I would be very surprised if Monzo don’t add a running balance soon”

I don’t have your faith. Not after they removed the functionality in the first place.

I went through it to but that’s why I specified iOS in case you were on Android, Fastest way I can see to reach statements for iOS is:

Slide down feed tray to show more options > Click Sort Code & Account No at the top > Statement History > Statement you want

I’m pretty sure theres a longer way of getting to them as well.

But anyway like I said, I agree, you shouldn’t have to click for it anyway.

I only have hope as it’s all iteration, they completely rewrote the app, left bits out, but some of these things i.e running balance have been complained about a lot.

I wouldn’t write off it coming back, especially as Budgeting is getting an overhaul next, this could be considered under that.

Slide down > tap “Account and overdraft” > tap “Statement History”> tap “Dec 1 - Present” > tap “Bank Statement PDF”> Touch fingerprint sensor > Tap “Open with”

I haven’t written it off, but much of my enthusiasm has gone. I am not out there recommending it to people, any more. I did, briefly look at a couple of other challenger banks, but there was only one that appealed (can’t remember which or why, now), might have been Starling, and put the question to them about running balance…the answer was negative. For now, I am reconciling my accounts (in YNAB) more frequently, rather than let it go too long.

Ah well

I would imagine yours is a fairly minority use case. I say this as the way in which Monzo analysed usage for the new layout would have brought statements more front and center, should they have realised people taking seven clicks to get to them.

The truth would appear to be that people aren’t looking at their statements at all. I know I aren’t!

That’s the point though…I don’t want to use statements on any kind of regular basis, but I do want/need a running balance. But…now they have removed the running balance, the statement is only way I can get it.

One slightly niche issue but related. You can download a PDF of your statement which has your running account balance. However, if you download the CSV file the running balance is omitted. This is probably because the CSV is simply a database dump of transactions, whilst the pdf has some additional processing. However, i think it would be really useful if the CSV file had the running account balance included with each transaction like other banks. Would make accounting a lot easier. Understandably it’s not a high priority change but should be a fairly easy change as i’d argue it’s a bug not a feature

I can live without the graph. It was fun, but basically useless, but not being able to easily see what my balance was on a given date is becoming a pain. I actually wrote it down yesterday so I could sweep across “unspent before payday” cash today. Nuts.

In the spending history we’ve already got a “total spent that day”, if this was shown as “total spent/balance at closing” this would be great. £66 spent of £1287 for example.

It’s not a DNS issue, so I can only assume this is hard to implement because of caching :grinning:

While not convenient, a running account balance is shown on downloaded statements (Account-> Statement history -> select period -> download)

Having a running balance feature would be really good
