Testing Marketplace Beta

Looking at the scrollbar, it looks like you were scrolling just fine and were able to see the whole scope of the page. Or have you seen that page before and there should be more content? In which case it might be the loading of the whole page timed-out half-way and you got as much as could be downloaded/made available to view?

Everything loads fine, it scrolls to the top and bottom of the list fine then note how the categories bar ‘sticks’ to the list so I can not scroll up or down around 8 seconds in

Monzo has now removed the savings and investments categories from the Beta, citing the need to make some bigger improvements than usual in the near future.

Any thoughts from the community on this one?

Pretty much the two things that I would use the Marketplace for so… not great as it currently stands.

Envisaging there’s going to be a substantial shift in how it’s presented if they feel the need to remove it to ease development. Quite excited!

But the email says that

Your feedback has helped us find out some useful things:

Savings: you’d like to turn a pot into a savings account, and manage it from the Monzo app.

Investments: you’d like to sign up to new accounts seamlessly, add existing accounts to Monzo and manage them through the app.

Energy: you’d like to get an accurate quote by giving us more information. You also want to sort and filter different providers more easily, and sign up seamlessly.

And we’ll be making some changes in light of what we’ve learned.

So I think it’s about to get way more useful.

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to add a little more context to the email we sent out earlier.

The purpose of the Marketplace Beta was to learn

The purpose of the marketplace was to understand, in a very lean way, how people want to interact with savings, energy and investments as well as get an idea of what product categories you want to see next.

We’ve learned tons thanks to your great feedback

We’ve learned tons about what you’d like to see, from your comments here on the forum, your in-app feedback and some of the more quantitative measures. As has been posted above, the learnings varied quite a bit between the product categories which is helpful to hear - it means the marketplace probably won’t be a one-size-fits-all-products solution.

But we also learned that the marketplace is more alpha than beta

We also got plenty of feedback that the marketplace in it’s current form isn’t as useful, nor as delightful an experience as people would like (plenty of feedback told us it was more in fact more alpha than beta ).

What’s great is that we now have a good idea of how to make it both useful and delightful, but it won’t be an overnight transformation. We’re planning out our next steps now, and when we have a better idea of what we’ll be working on and when, I’d love to update you.

In the meantime, we think it’s best to take the savings and investments out of the marketplace as the experience isn’t as useful or delightful as it could be! We’ve left energy in there as there’s still a few more incremental updates we can do, and a little more we can learn.

As ever, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Rich

This was an experiment, so I don’t think we’ll miss much if that part has ended. Energy (and maybe insurance) will always be referrals (perhaps offering some usage data) but saving accounts would be way better as integrations.

If they want to offer real integrations for those types (one click sign up, see balance in monzo), it would be really confusing to have a mix of referral links and real integrations, so they probably want to get integrations done first, and roll it out that way.

If they do this right it will be a real differentiator from other banks.

With savings, to achieve the perfect integration, it seems as though Monzo would have to offer their own savings products and may have to introduce interest.

Not necessarily. They can integrate with firms offering savings accounts in a way that you would notice, if they wanted to resell others’ accounts as their own. They won’t do that though - they will instead give you different choices. That’s what was said during Tom Blomfield’s Q&A when someone asked about upcoming features this year - with his response being the ability manage savings accounts through the app.

I think the integrations idea for savings accounts is great, especially if they’re hoping to achieve the functionality to save into a Pot and then move that into an interest-earning savings account from another provider (but all within the app).
However I’m not sure how Monzo would achieve an in-app integration on the investments side. Those accounts are so complex (at least in my experience of using peer to peer lenders Zopa/RateSetter etc., not so much for robo advice like Wealthsimple), that you would definitely have to leave the Monzo app at some point to be able to see your full account.

It’d be nice to see the balance at least, I imagine they’ll start with that and work up. For simple savings accounts that’s all you need. There are plenty of standard interest bearing cash savings accounts but it’s hard to compare them every year - if you could open in-app and move money around and see balance on each one that in itself would be really useful. I’d be happy with that for a first version.

For more complex products like a Stocks & Shares ISA or Zopa they’d probably just show transfers to the account and account balance, then leave management to the other service - this would be more about seeing all your money in one place every day when you open Monzo rather than managing every detail in one place, which would be nice but probably isn’t a realistic goal and would really limit adoption.

I was on the testing trial, and I have to admit I didn’t use it. Mainly because I didn’t find the options competitive enough compared with those shown on MoneySavingExpert.

If it had the same rates, I would definitely have used it and found it enjoyable (hopefully).

Does anyone have a rough timeline of when it will be possible to see external accounts such as other banks or credit cards in the app?

As far as I know, Monzo haven’t given a timeline yet or even confirmed that, that’s going to happen.

The idea was floated here -

& I think that’s as far as it got..

During his recent Q&A, Tom did imply a certain level of integration with the outside world.

In response to what non-speculative Monzo feature he’s most looking forward to, he said “The ability to take the money in a pot and move it to a savings bank to earn interest, all without leaving the Monzo app.”

Now that’s not specifically about other bank accounts or credit cards, but gives some insight into the thinking.

So something that I think should be part of the Marketplace is an ability to link accounts up - so if I apply for an Amex on the Marketplace, the spending I do on my Amex should be linked into Monzo and the Spending tab, for example.

Being able to trust the reviews and ratings within the Monzo marketplace will be so important when users are faced with so many different rates, promotions and terms for similar products.

I really hope it won’t just be based on “Trustpilot score” as it was in the early preview. As we’ve seen in the Trustpilot discussion on here it seems there is a consensus that unscrupulous brands or their agents can just create loads of fake accounts to boost their ratings and reduce their competitors’. It doesn’t help us at all to see the Trustpilot score in the marketplace if we don’t believe the reviews are going to be genuine.

What would be great would be a Monzonaut rating. When someone takes up a deal in the marketplace and they make a confirmed purchase - after some period of time they could get a follow up feed item or button within the add-on asking if they’d rate their experience of the service for the benefit of other Monzo users.

That way if 1000 people say this is a great product then you know they are real users like you and they can’t have made duplicate reviews to distort the ratings.

Nice thought, but pulling different data from different sources all will top security and data protection would be be a difficult task i would think.
I get it though, to have my 0% credit card balance in monzo would be a dream!!
