Hi Monzo team,
I’ve been really impressed with Monzo overall and recently decided to switch fully because the app is much better than traditional banking apps in a lot of ways.
However, after using it more seriously for budgeting, I’ve run into two gaps that make it harder to rely on the app without creating workarounds outside Monzo.
1. The Targets / Trends view doesn’t show what is actually left to spend across individual targets
What I really need is a total of how much I still have left across my individual category targets, so I can compare that to my account balance and know whether I’m actually safe.
At the moment, the view seems to focus on overall target progress, including overspending, rather than showing the sum of what remains across the categories that still have budget left.
What would be much more useful is a clear figure showing:
- the true total remaining across all active targets
- excluding overspent targets
This would make budgeting much more reliable and prevent situations where it looks like there is money left to spend when, in practice, the remaining amounts across categories tell a different story.
2. No clear total for spending outside my planned targets
I can set targets for my regular categories, which is useful, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear way to see a single monthly total for spending that happened outside those targets.
What would be helpful is:
- a total for non-target / unplanned spending this month
- with the ability to drill into it by category and merchant, so I can still see where the money actually went
At the moment, I can see those transactions individually, but not in one clean “this is how much you spent outside your plan” view.
Overall, I think Monzo is very strong, but these two gaps mean that for target-based budgeting I end up needing external workarounds, which feels like something the app itself should already handle.
I’d love to see:
- a clear remaining safe-to-spend total based on individual targets, excluding overspent targets
- a clear unplanned / non-target spending total
I think both would make Monzo much stronger for people trying to budget properly and avoid drifting over their limits.
