Submitting sign-up verification code shows an error

Issue:
I’m in the sign-up flow and at the step where I need to verify my phone number. It sends me a verification code, but when I submit it in the app, the app shows an orange error at the bottom of the screen that says “Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again and contact us if it continues.”

Details to reproduce:
OS: Android
Device: Pixel 1
App Version: 3.8.0

Off the top of my head this means potentially the number or email address has already been registered before. Either of those sound plausible?

Yes! That was exactly it. A friend of mine was in the middle of their setup process before abandoning it. I now use their number, so it was rejecting the verification code. I solved the problem by asking them to finish their setup process (identity verification, etc.), and then changing their registered phone number to their new one. Then, the next day, I was able to resend the verification code to my phone and register successfully.
