Starling Feedback

There is whole Starling Feedback thread here … :upside_down_face:

Another voice of reason. :grinning:

Hi Robin

The Starling community is much newer than Monzo’s and is still finding it’s feet. I really value the experience that some Monzo members have and like it when they swing by the Starling forum. (Gets heated from time to time :flushed:) but then it gets lively here as well.

As colleagues here are saying, the Monzo v Starling thing gets boring and the conversation only gets useful when features are compared and stuff.

Both are better for the other being there (and if that ain’t philosophical, I don’t know what is. :grinning:).

Starling have a full in house stack, apparently.

Starling now operate a current account on their “full stack” - they have been as affected by the outages from GPS as all other users of GPS services - are they now processing all their Current Account payments using their own systems on their built ‘full stack’ or do they have any plans to bring it in house onto their ‘full stack’ ? I think Anne suggested they had no plans to bring payment processing in house onto their ‘full stack’ on the Starling forum

Their banking stack is in-house however cards are processed through a third-party (that handles communication with the MasterCard network), so while accounts and wire transfers are reliable they are still at the mercy of that third-party when it comes to card payments and they’ve been pretty naughty lately (lots of outages).

Monzo has both the banking and card stack in-house for the current account.

looks like Monzo pre paid has another outage presumably GPS again - just got a notification SMS from Monzo pre paid status page sign up - Monzo Current account seems fine- wonder whats happening with other cards

Starling are now sending notifications when you open their app

Good. They’ll find it easier to keep customers on side if they’re proactively informing of outages. GPS clearly has problems at lunchtimes. Third day in a row, isn’t it?

So glad Monzo CA is all in-house. I don’t like uncertainty

Except you’ll still only see it if you open the app, so it doesn’t prevent you trying to pay only to find your card fails. To be fair though, this is the same as Monzo.

Unless you’ve signed up for Status Page alerts. Which is why I think this should be suggested as part of the user onboarding process.

And I think that Starling should have a similar status page. This is not even a “challenger bank” innovation:

Though  doesn’t have text alerts, but I’ve never had a card outage from them which is when texts are most useful.

https://starlingbank.statuspage.io ??

Ah, nice one! I tried starling.statuspage.io and got redirected to the main Status Page site.

As with Monzo, this should really be part of the signup flow. I was never made aware of this, and I also didn’t see it on a brief look through their website.

That’s a decent workaround, and it does mean you can be notified if all their systems fail. But for payment failures, a push notification in app would reach everyone without needing an extra sign up

i typed starling status page into google (literally just now because of the outage) :joy:

Good point. I completely forgot about that as an option. Not sure why!

so why does the Starling status page say no problems, the forum say they have problems and my app says it has problems ? - which is true - maybe just present the card and find out

No SMS update option on the Starling site (I guess they’re being cheap?). So no good, really. If I’m going to check something I would just open the app. I want proactive notifications.

And Ian has pointed out the other big problem with it!

ah, when I first loaded it, it said partially degraded service. I wonder if it has been fixed

All round, I think push notifications are the better way to go, and just update it if its been fixed. :woman_shrugging:

it also says that Starling have only had one problem on 25th Oct - were they not affected by other outages in the past week or so on the 24th and 23rd there were problems with Monzo from their log - were Starling not affected ?
