Starling Feedback

I have been using Monzo on and off now since early 16. Mainly as a budgeting tool, love reading through the community posts, seeing the sneak peaks and am really looking forward to getting either an invite to the CA or being part of a larger roll out.

Meantime, I decided that I would try Statling Bank. I have moved my wages to this account along with all my direct debits and standing orders. The only issue I had was with my employer, I was unable to use the self serve HR system to change bank details as it hadn’t been updated with Starlings sort code, however this was easily sorted and my wages were paid in with no issues.

I have been on holiday to Spain, used my card with no problems in restaurants, shops, ATMs and on the flight. Just had to remember not convert to GBP at the terminals and the rate was better than my Revolut card. The card also works just fine at the Tesco pay at the pump. No card outages or declines experienced so far (although I’ve only been using it for approx a month so early days)

The app covers the basics, can’t set targets but it does analyse your spending. Apple Pay works perfectly and their community does claim goals will be coming soon. Instant notifications etc work as expected.

As I hadn’t used Starling on my new phone and I couldn’t remember my password, support got me back up and running within 10 minutes.

Overall I can’t fault Starling Bank, however the Monzo app is much better and I will be moving as soon as it’s available.

I’ve heard good things about Starling - a friend went to them instead of :monzo: purely because Starling have a “public” CA and Monzo don’t have one you can just sign up for :frowning: So hopefully people should be migrated over sooner rather than later so Monzo can offer the CA to new sign ups…

How long does it take to open a Starling account?

They told me the other night it would take up to week, is this true?

For me it was like 2 days between downloading the app and getting the card, but that’s just one sample point

Cool, I will do it on Monday then, I know they said they do the checks 24/7 but mail won’t leave till then anyway so may as well wait.

Given up waiting for a Monzo CA then? :scream:

Yup

Your account opens pretty much immediately (after the verification, which is quick). It’s the card that takes time to arrive. But unlike Monzo, Starling let you use your account as soon as it’s verified (e.g. payments in and out).

Cool, it does Apple Pay though in the mean time yeah?

Don’t know, as my phone doesn’t support Apple Pay.

I’ve opened a Starling account to have a ‘savings’ account so wasn’t too bothered about using the card.

Yes it does, set up is very simple in-app. Definitely the best feature on an otherwise numbing app.

Interesting :eyes:

It took about 2 hours when I signed up for Starling

Cool, I got a code as well.

Starling community could wake up with someone like you. Do sign up :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Same name as here, go look in the ‘Welcome to the community’ thread

That forum is ugly though not gonna lie :joy:

This code thing I don’t get with Starling when I opened my account didn’t use any code just downloaded app and signed up - There is also no mention of Starling being in preview/beta
I think It’s a decent app with lots of improvements and features planned and the big plus for Starling is NFC support for both iOS and Android

From what I have see it looks OK but this thing here is what I hate

It’s like that shitty graph thing at the top of the Monzo app, not useful to me and ugly.

Yeah, having a single day’s spend is completely useless. Which I could ignore if I didn’t have to swipe past this screen just to get to my transactions.

Relatedly, having ‘lost’ Monzo’s pulse when I opened the current account last week, I actually miss it. I did subconsciously glance at it to get an idea of my balance over time.
