I have been using Monzo on and off now since early 16. Mainly as a budgeting tool, love reading through the community posts, seeing the sneak peaks and am really looking forward to getting either an invite to the CA or being part of a larger roll out.
Meantime, I decided that I would try Statling Bank. I have moved my wages to this account along with all my direct debits and standing orders. The only issue I had was with my employer, I was unable to use the self serve HR system to change bank details as it hadnât been updated with Starlings sort code, however this was easily sorted and my wages were paid in with no issues.
I have been on holiday to Spain, used my card with no problems in restaurants, shops, ATMs and on the flight. Just had to remember not convert to GBP at the terminals and the rate was better than my Revolut card. The card also works just fine at the Tesco pay at the pump. No card outages or declines experienced so far (although Iâve only been using it for approx a month so early days)
The app covers the basics, canât set targets but it does analyse your spending. Apple Pay works perfectly and their community does claim goals will be coming soon. Instant notifications etc work as expected.
As I hadnât used Starling on my new phone and I couldnât remember my password, support got me back up and running within 10 minutes.
Overall I canât fault Starling Bank, however the Monzo app is much better and I will be moving as soon as itâs available.
Iâve heard good things about Starling - a friend went to them instead of purely because Starling have a âpublicâ CA and Monzo donât have one you can just sign up for So hopefully people should be migrated over sooner rather than later so Monzo can offer the CA to new sign upsâŚ
Your account opens pretty much immediately (after the verification, which is quick). Itâs the card that takes time to arrive. But unlike Monzo, Starling let you use your account as soon as itâs verified (e.g. payments in and out).
This code thing I donât get with Starling when I opened my account didnât use any code just downloaded app and signed up - There is also no mention of Starling being in preview/beta
I think Itâs a decent app with lots of improvements and features planned and the big plus for Starling is NFC support for both iOS and Android
Yeah, having a single dayâs spend is completely useless. Which I could ignore if I didnât have to swipe past this screen just to get to my transactions.
Relatedly, having âlostâ Monzoâs pulse when I opened the current account last week, I actually miss it. I did subconsciously glance at it to get an idea of my balance over time.
