The person who got the new card I posted received it out of the blue - indeed, they didn’t even want the new card.

It looks like the supplier has changed as the new cards are from Tag Systems and not allpay. It is dated 06/18 whereas the original teal card was 03/18, and there are a number of other small changes in addition to the change in text colour. The changes I have found so far:

  • The text is bigger in general, but the account number has gone from really small to the same size as the long number on the card.
  • The long number now starts at the same place as name, rather than slightly indented.
  • The signature strip is ever so slightly longer and wider.
  • The magstripe is slightly wider.
  • The contactless logo has moved a bit to the right so it’s no longer directly next to the signature strip.
  • The chip is significantly smaller, and is now similar to my other bank cards apart from a small notch. The old card chip was identical to the one on the Monzo card.

One thing I was displeased about with the original teal card was the overall quality, and it still seems to be somewhat of a let down. My teal card has slight print errors, marks that one come off, and a slight lip around the edge where the two parts meet.

The newer card isn’t as bad, but (it is difficult to photograph) the text on the back doesn’t look like part of the card and the letters seem unusually thin at certain points. Even looking face on you can very clearly see three transparent but shiny strips stuck to the card that the text is printed on. In comparison, the older card looks like the text is printed directly on the card.

Overall, a welcome improvement in readability which is what matters. I’m curious mainly about the chip change, though this could just be a matter of changing supplier. I’ll note that I have been somewhat picky here as a critique of the card, but in reality none of the ‘issues’ are really important.

Personally, I don’t carry the card and won’t be asking for a new new card. However, if you have a current teal card and find the white on teal hard to read, I’d definitely consider raising this as the newer card is much clearer.

I joined Starling in July and got my purple card the same day as the teal card was announced. Asked for one immediately, but got told it was “for new customers only”…

I wonder why they chose black for the writing, and not the navy blue as used on the Business card?

I hate the badly formatted telephone number but also looks like lack of space may have something to do with it.

I just checked when 020 came in. It was 1999! So 19 years later and people still don’t seem to have got the hang that 0207 and 0208 are not separate areas. :pensive:

Is there much point in adding the account number, if you’re not going to put the sort code? Generally if you need one, you need the other?

I guess given that most of the country has four or five digit area codes then those of us not in London, southampton, Coventry, NI or Cardiff aren’t used to three digit area codes.

The “+44 (0) …” format is incorrect. It’s either 020 or +44 …” without the (0). I’m not too bothered about the spacing, but the “(0)” is an abomination.

You can’t imagine how annoying it is when you’re designing systems that are supposed to process & route calls and have to validate and try to make sense of this (do I drop the zero? Do I just pass it on as-is and hope the next carrier figures it out?)… :roll_eyes:

But I’d put money on it that it’s not those outside of London mistyping it, it’s folk inside London - because the transition from 0171 and 0181 to 020 was miscommunicated.

Anyway, to stay (vaguely) on topic, Starling should really know this, being based in London! :slight_smile:

As seemingly most scammers use London geographical based numbers, for those of us who live well outside of London, some of us just ignore every single London number that pops up on our phone, well I do anyway and so does my Wife. That means that even if Starling were to try and call me, unless ‘STARLING BANK’ pops up on my iphone, I won’t answer it. I don’t even have my voicemail activated because so many scammers use random number generators, don’t even know who they’re actually calling anyway and almost always ring off after 5 rings. I’ve got almost 300 blocked numbers on my phone, the vast majority of them with a London geographical code.

Because the overall (and, as yet unfinished, ahem joint accounts!) design process has been piss poor from the beginning?

I’d agree as they’ve given a different number for use within the UK, and this is labelled specifically for international use. Absolutely no one has looked this over with a second pair of eyes.

It’s just so Starling. There, just not quite there enough.

In Starling’s defense though, they are far from the only ones doing this regarding the numbers.

Proofreading on this scale takes minutes.

It’s the lazy designer who doesn’t think, “what am I actually trying to communicate here?” and makes assumptions about things like telephone numbers.
