Starling Bank Chat (Part 2)

Eau de Starling

Honestly, I’m surprised nobody has made a play for Yonder credit card yet.

Would be a good addition in the credit card space.

I closed my Starling account last week (trying to consolidate my accounts down so being brutal) and got a message saying I wouldn’t be allowed back or something to that effect.

Not sure if they’re just going to focus on Engine but can’t see Starling growing if they close off so many customers.

It’s ā€œtemporaryā€ according to Starling Customer Service but it’s been that way for quite a while.

From memory I’ve been trying to go back for at least 2 years and the response has been ā€œno dice hombreā€

Yeah I couldn’t open a joint account, euro account, additional account, nothing.

Very odd.

They are far from the only bank preventing people from returning, Chase still won’t resolve the issue to allow people to rejoin.

These are the only two I know of?

I’m hanging on to Chase - even though it’s pretty bare bones I have hopes for the future. Maybe.

Think I posted this earlier in the thread but you could allegedly get a new account back in 2022 https://web.archive.org/web/20221205044647/https://help.starlingbank.com/personal/topics/account-set-up/can-i-reopen-my-starling-personal-account/. AFAIK Chase have always just said ā€œnoā€ from the start.

Good spot, the issue has to be because of something like data retention rules and banks being required to keep data for a certain period linked to you after which it’s anonymised. Taking a complete stab in the dark but that’s the only logical reason I could think as to why they can’t, that those rules changed or something

I think they stopped around the time they were under FCA investigation in early 2023, they then agreed to put in extra checks and controls which seemingly included preventing past customers from re-joining and restricting opening of additional account types. I really would have thought enough time had passed that they would have lifted all of these as the FCA final notice was in September 2024 but maybe there’s an agreed timeframe or something like that.

Starling definitely used to let you reopen your account. I closed both my personal and joint one and was able to reopen them both. It was pretty early on.

Something changed but they don’t now, really unfortunate as others have said because it’s stone walling a whole load of potential customers wanting to return to Starling.

It’s is a real shame, and something I hope they reverse soon. Although I also hope they start expanding their offerings. The lack of loans and credit cards stands out.

I don’t get why people really want a Starling credit card, it’s already a super-crowded space with tons of options out there. Reminds me of when people were desperate for Chase to fully roll their credit card out and then once it was available people soon realised it wasn’t doing anything differently or better than existing cards.

Because I personally prefer to try and have most things with one bank. I do always have a backup and backup cards, but I try to use one bank for my main spending, credit etc.

I reopened one but then closed it due to continuous fraud. It was a thing.

Yup I had opened and closed a few times. Had to call up and ask them to unlink mobile number from the closed account.

That fraud stuff you had was mental

It was frustrating for sure, I’d probably still be with them otherwise :joy:

I get where you’re coming from but these days I don’t see the need to keep all your eggs in one basket, it’s so quick and easy to check balances and move money around that restricting yourself to just one bank for everything seems overly limiting to me. Especially when it comes to the ā€œadd-onā€ products like credit cards and loans with all the various 0%/low interest offers etc.
