I personally don’t understand why standing orders are limited to working days, especially since they’re just automated faster payments.
I’d much rather know the payment would arrive the same day I set it up, rather than the issue that if it lands on the weekend, there could be a delay of one or two days.
Whether it’s industry standards or not, it’s one standard that should change in my opinion.
To be clear, I am not opposed to the idea of standing orders and direct debits being processed 7 days a week rather than just on working days.
What I object to is some organisations doing this independently rather than the banking industry changing the relevant standards as many rely on transfers between different bank accounts to meet their financial commitments - and it is important to have certainly of when such payments will occur.
I agree with this. It creates chaos for individuals managing funds across several accounts. Monies come into Starling on a Monday meeting Payne re that went out on a Saturday. Yet the date on payments was the same. To cater for Easter this means you need a 4 day grace period between payments in and payments out. Crazy!
Quite why Monzo (or your preferred neobank) hasn’t given us the option for standing orders to go out every day (as now) or to only go out on working days is one of the mysteries of the universe…
I don’t understand how the fintech lot making payments any day of the week impacts the banks that don’t do them any day of the week.
The funds would be there the following working day so all is well.
Going the other way, from old school to fintech, it’s possible it could, however, you do have the option to choose the following working day or previous working day, or exact date when setting up scheduled payments out from fintech so it’s basically down to you to manage it effectively.
With legacy banks you still have to account for weekends and bank holidays. If you have payments that come out two or three days after payday, as I do, I would have to hope the legacy bank sends the money over and the receiving legacy processes this, before processing the payment.
With Monzo or Starling, for me, that concern goes away. I know the transfer will always occur the day after I’m paid and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a weekend or not.
With legacy banks, I’d always have to manually make the transfer, now I don’t.
I don’t know whether the rules have been broken by their approach but for me personally, it’s very helpful and works well.
Given that faster payments work almost 24x7 , why does the industry not update to allow scheduled payments on the day they’re scheduled. That’s the crazy bit for me.
Maybe and I know some banks have lots of separate systems but in any case there is no pressure on them to make the change, either from the public or industry.
Whilst it’s not the sexiest of updates, it does shows they’ve still got at least one developer working on improvements and innovations with the Starling App…..
It lets you paste bank details in one go, it figures out which bits are the account number and sort code, and pastes them both in the right place at once.
