Starling Bank Chat (Part 2)

Real shame, been declined a year ago and tried again to no avail. Nothing on credit report to deny me, no missed payments, no bank switched or credit agreements from spam of 12 months. With them being under scrutiny and restrictions, I can understand not creating new accounts but to deny anyone to ever have an account because of issues their end seems strange

Starling are allowing new customers, their customer base has grown but at a much slower rate than say Monzo.

It’s not clear when they’ll allow ex-customers to return. It’s a bit like Chase in that regard.

Try contacting them and see if they’ve changed their position.

They’re still not allowing many of us to open the savings account.

That’s the one that puzzles me more , especially on a savings account

Not even a savings account, doesn’t have its own account number.

It’s essentially a space which is even more bizarre.

In favour of banks (as is tradition) it’s far less work for them to implement this way.

Account numbers aren’t unlimited, saves a fair bit of resource. Not sure account numbers can be reusable.

Does that matter though? If you put money in it, it earns interest which is what you want.

Monzo savings accounts don’t have account numbers either.

No as in I don’t care how it’s set up it makes no difference to me, but if it’s just a compartmentalised space in side my account that earns interest, why are some customers not eligible.

The reason why Starling has been on the ‘naughty step’ for a while and is restricted on opening new accounts is that they failed to fully follow the money laundering checks.

It’s NOT to do with ‘risky lending’ where there might be a concern that they’ve given people credit that they can’t pay back/get into a debt spiral etc.

Savings accounts (or spaces in this case) can be used for money laundering as well - so that’s why everything is impacted.

It’s nothing to do with any line of credit and purely ‘can money be moved through this account?’

Interesting, how can spaces be used for laundering out of interest?

If the only way in and out is to the main account?

Spending spaces can have virtual cards attached to them so you can make payments directly out of them.

Maybe saving spaces are not unique enough in their system to differentiate between spending/saving spaces (I don’t launder money personally, so don’t have experience in this).

The app looks like it would let me apply for an overdraft… is this new?

They’ve always done overdrafts, at least a few years? Or did they stop?

They may have stopped for a while but I still have my initial overdraft from Starling from 2019 for a very generous ÂŁ5000

Can people open additional accounts now?

Not me.

My options have changed from previously “We are unable to offer you any new accounts” to a page with Joint and Business options available. I don’t need either though to go through the process to check.

My overdraft says “You have no overdraft offers” but I think it’s always said that.

I guess that’s progress?

Mine used to say that, but I have now been offered and accepted an overdraft.

My circumstances haven’t changed in any significant way recently so I presume this is a change at starling, rather than with my credit record.
