✨ Spring cleaning: making it easier to manage your account & see Pots payments

Limited data, but it doesn’t really look like there’s been a significant increase in roll out. Still tracking to ~10% reach.

Looks like its status quo, I can’t find any options to categorise pot transfers. You can add notes and #tags, but I think you could do that before. I think categorising pot transfers would be problematic and could lead to double counting;

Just got it!!!

Heya, good question!

We’re looking into whether this is the right behaviour (in your words, bug or intended), but in the meantime I can explain why it’s happened (this’ll get a lil technical, sorry about that!):

Before we made this change, the only information the app has about your transactions came from your main Account. For an example, let’s say you went to McDonald’s and spent £5.24, that got rounded up to £6.

In our backend, those are two separate transactions - £5.24 at McDonald’s plus a 76p Pot deposit. What the app does is mush them together (technical term, see?) for your main feed so that it shows a single item for McDonald’s as well as the associated roundup - a small icon with the pot’s logo. When you assign a category/notes/tags to that item, you’re assigning it to the “parent” transaction, i.e. the £5.24 you spent at McD’s, not the £76p roundup.

Now, for your Pot Feed, we’re returning a list of only the transactions that are to do with your Pot - in the case of your McDonald’s, that means that we don’t return the main £5.24 purchase since that’s only to do with your main account, but we do return the 76p deposit - unfortunately that’s not where you added your notes etc. so it looks to you as though they’re missing.

Hopefully that helps you understand why this is happening! The way we’d address it in the backend is by applying any notes you set to both transactions, but we need to be certain it’s the right thing to do (and that it won’t have any unintended side-effects!), as historically we’ve been very careful about keeping transactions distinct from each other.

Thanks for the detailed explanation :slightly_smiling_face:.

I understand that in relation to roundup transactions (due to the 2 separate transactions), but not sure I understand it when it comes to standard pot withdrawals/deposits.

If I withdraw e.g. £50 from a pot to pay for something, is that not just a single transaction on the backend? Those transactions are also missing the notes from the pot feeds whilst still showing on the home feed.

Roundups aside, not that one person’s opinion on this will sway anything lol, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that historic notes will return for normal/deposits withdrawals :crossed_fingers::slightly_smiling_face:. Being able to scroll down the history of a pot and see at glance what all the withdrawals have been for has been key for me keeping track of things.

My guess is that this has happened because previously, there wasn’t a Pot feed, just the main feed. So the notes are attached to the transaction in the main feed. They’re now creating a Pot feed by populating it the first time with any pot transfers from the main feed, but not bringing the notes over when creating the new Pot feed. From now on, presumably, you can add notes to items in the Pot feed, but this won’t sync with the relevant item on the main feed. They are two separate feed items in different feeds (like when moving money between joint and personal accounts).

Slightly off topic, but if consideration is being given to how notes behave could I ask consideration also be given to the issue of bank transfer references being overwritten when notes field is used on bank transfer transactions. I feel this is a huge problem in relation to current implementation of notes.

Sorry for plugging another thread. It’s just that the linked thread hasn’t had any sign of attention from Monzo staff, whereas this thread does.

Adding onto this lol, but notes on external accounts would be great too so I could use tags  and/or more than 50 categories thereby removing the need for hashtags at all.

I checked this morning and I didn’t have the tabs. Just looked now and they’re here :tada: :sunglasses:

One very minor bit of feedback on this so far…

On this screen it would be nice to be able to swipe left and right to switch tabs as well as tapping them.

The active state animates in like it would if you swiped, so it would be a nice touch.
