Security consideration: business debit card

Hey, just a thought on the business debit card design. They have every detail you could possibly need to run an online transaction visible on the face of the card.

Full card PAN
CVV number
Expiry date
Company name

Company address is public record, so easily referenced from the company name

Can the design be reconsidered to at least split this information between two sides? At present, a high definition camera has a really good chance of picking up everything a scammer needs to run a fraudulent transaction from the card face

Do you often let scammers take high res pictures of your cards, but only on one side?

Do you feel like you add value to this conversation with comments like that?

There’s very little you can do to prevent someone with a covert camera around payment terminals if your card has everything a scammer needs on one side.

If you’re going to live your life with this level of fear then you’d never do anything and all your money would be under your bed.

There are mastercard/visa design rules and they would say that numbers had to be on different sides if they thought it was an issue.

Don’t Chase have all the numbers on one side?

Isn’t it company name on the front, details on the back?

I though Chase had the numberless card?

Nope, all details on one side on mine

Yeah can confirm my Chase card has no PAN at all on it

Virgin credit card has all one one side but it’s a personal card - so my address is not something that could be looked up from my name

Interesting point. But for an online transaction, wouldn’t you get an approval request in-app which you could decline?

Can you post a picture of your card here to show what you mean by all on one side

I think that in app approval is for over certain amounts. Completely anecdotal but I feel like I get that LESS on my business account than I do on personal

Sometimes but not always. £1000s was cleared from my account not long back with no checks (got it back but it was still a faff). The existence of 3DS doesn’t mean people still don’t have to be careful with their card details.

Monzo must think I’m an extremely risk-prone customer. I got 3DS on a £4.99 Netflix Subscription :joy:

I get them on almost everything, apart from the one time someone spent about £1500 on oculus rift vouchers on my account

I’m guessing scammers know which places still don’t use 3DS.

I see your point but isn’t that the majority of bank cards now and forever? I can’t think of any bank card I’ve ever owned that hasn’t had all of the details on the front except the CVV.

And number of cards thereafter where it’s all been on the back. Isn’t that the norm now?

The problem is specifically to business cards because the business name is there. For personal cards your address is not possible to get so you can’t use the card online. But for businesses the address is possible to lookup on Companies House

I see that but I, personally, don’t see this issue. If you dropped the card and someone picked it up, they could get the details anyway.

How often is it likely someone is peering over your shoulder writing down all of the details.
