šŸŽ‰ Say hello to Billsbackā„¢!

Hey everyone :waving_hand:

I’m Abhi from the Subscriptions team, and I’m back with exciting news!

Introducing Billsbackā„¢

We’ve been cooking up something new, and it’s finally ready to share! From October 1, 2025, Monzo Extra, Perks and Max subscribers will get a new feature called Billsbackā„¢ (starting from Ā£3 a month, 18+, Ts&Cs apply).

Pay any eligible bill or subscription from your Monzo accounts, and you’re in with a chance of getting it covered by us. We’ll select and cover 1,000+ bills and subscriptions at random every month, and refund you up to Ā£150 per bill. It’s a little break from your bills, on us.

See the full Billsback, Extra, Perks and Max/Max Family terms and conditions. You can always opt out if you want.

How will I know if a bill is covered by Monzo?

If your bill is one of the lucky ones, we’ll add the money you paid back to your account (up to Ā£150). We’ll let you know in the app.

What fits the bill?

Billsback applies to loads of the bills you’re already paying. We are covering bills and subscriptions from 300+ providers to start. We’ve tried to add as many as we can, especially the ones most popular with Monzo customers already. We’ll add more over time, based on what you tell us matters most. You can see the full list here.

Got a joint account? As long as one of you is an Extra, Perks or Max subscriber, your eligible joint bills are in with the same chance to be covered!

Where can you find it in the app?

Billsback will live in a new :sparkles:Rewards:sparkles: section along with our existing cashback product that you know and love. Stay tuned for more in this space.

As always, we’re excited to hear what you think, like are there any providers you’d like us to add?

Let us know your thoughts below :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Thanks
Abhi

This is good stuff!

Will the billsback money go into our main account or back into the Pot it was paid from?

Is there a possibility that we could set a rule ā€œIf billsback is paid, move it into X account/Potā€ such as savings or investments?

Are we notified by notification, or only within app?

This makes it sound like Billsback itself costs £3/month, which I think is not what you mean.

This is a great incentive. Love it. I do have a few questions though:

Same as Carlo, if the bills are paid back, where is it paid back to? Main balance, bills pot, or dedicated ā€œbills back" or even cashback pot?

The T&C’s say ā€œyour personal debit cardā€ when referring to personal account, but no mention for Joint. Can you confirm if it’s ANY card (excluding Flex), so virtual cards (including pay from pot VCs) and Joint/Joint VC cards are included?

I currently pay for Spotify via Google Play, but Google Play isn’t listed so I assume that wouldn’t be eligible. Interesting that Nintendo is listed, which would make sense for NSO subscription but eShop ourshases also show as Nintendo so I would assume these are also covered based on merchant name.

Glad you like!

Billsback refunds go to wherever the bill was paid from (personal or joint account / Pot)

You can’t do this automatically just yet, but I’m taking notes! :memo:

Yes, we’ll send you a push notification, and an in-app announcement screen to celebrate your win (see the screenshot in my post above). You can also track your wins in the app, if you tap into Billsback from your home screen, or your Extra/Perks/Max home.

Glad to see this includes bills paid from a joint account! Nice feature!

I wonder what the actual chances here are. Like how many are paid each month by all customers? It sounds brilliant but my mind is like ā€œwhat are the chances of being one of the 1,100 chosen from the XYZ entriesā€.

It is a tempting way of getting bills over to Monzo. Currently I get cashback on most of them already; it’s the chances of getting the bill paid back that’s stopping me.

Also, there’s a lot of chatter about merchant data being incorrect and not being corrected even months after reporting them. This includes some obvious ones like Amazon Prime.

If merchant data for an eligible billsback merchant is incorrect, and then a request to correct it is raised, how would this be handled (assuming it’s eventually corrected, which based on current experiences is unlikely)? Would that then become eligible, even months later?

@abhimonzo what are the exact odds here? Are you able to tell us how many eligible bills there were last month? Depending on the odds this could be a great perk or a useless one.

I’m still waiting for chat to respond to my query I raised back on 24th September about merchant data not being updated. A whole week.

It’s a simple question, is it broken or are monzo not bothering any more?

Didn’t want to take over the thread for merchant data, but did think it was relevant since this relies on data being accurate.

@BurnyCubbers77

  • Bills paid via virtual cards on all Pots (personal and joint) are included
  • Bills paid from joint account are included, as long as one of the partners has Extra, Perks or Max and neither is a Monzo employee or opted out from Billsback.
  • You’re right, Flex payments are excluded

@abhimonzo You’ve listed Zurich Assurance L as eligible and specified that the name must match exactly. My Zurich simply shows as Zurich Assurance

So what’s the difference? Or are you quoting what the merchant sends data through as rather than what we see in the app?

Also as @Carlo1460 has pointed out, nobody seems to be updating merchant data any more - or not that we can actively see. So this is going to cause confusion. Could we get a bit more info on this?

It’s a great addition though.

We pay a lot of bills from the JA - hopefully our chances of winning are higher. But knowing our luck, it’ll be the RSPCA bill that gets paid instead of the mortgage

A one in a thousand chance that one of your bills will be paid back.

Thanks @Chris_R :folded_hands:

We’ll use the ā€œMerchant Group Namesā€ listed in these tables to check whether your bill is eligible for Billsback. This information is provided to us by Mastercard, so the name shown in the terms and conditions table is how it’ll appear to Monzo on the transaction, rather than the name of the provider that you as a customer might see in your app under transactions. We’ve done some work to ensure that the data backing this list covers the maximum / majority of Monzo transactions for each merchant (e.g., Zurich Assurance L covers ~90%). But this is great feedback. We’ll get the one without the ā€œLā€ added ASAP!

It would be great when situations like this, there’s something on the Billsback page that says ā€œthese transactions are in with a chance of being paid backā€ or something, so if my bill isn’t there and it should be I can report it (and a way to do that! like with cashback would be great)

Other than that, wow this really came out of nowhere!
