I think Nationwide’s backlash is due to the fact that the card reader was almost mandatory and you had no other option to choose from. If the card reader was an optional measure with others to choose from, the noise would not be too loud for example if we were given a chance to use a carder reader, Physical security key, pass key or anything else.
A whole generation of people will have no idea how lucky they are with digital secure keys. I must’ve had a drawer full of card readers at one stage. The HSBC one was my favourite.
I wonder if there’s a reason that they couldn’t move to doing something along the lines of scanning the debit card with the phone and then prompting through the bank app for the PIN? There are phone apps that can scan debit cards so that step is certainly possible.
Through the NFC chip just like Yoti and apps that make NFC tags

Update for yall, just got my Railcard code through online banking this morning, and Railcard is on its way! Was surprised it was this early
Can I backdate my order to 1989, ya think?
Great year that
I use my Santander current account to pay my Octopus Energy bill via direct debit (due to cashback from Santander). I’ve noticed I didn’t receive cashback for my Octopus Energy payment in April. My suspicion is that it’s related Octopus Energy recently changing their payment processor (I think they’ve been gradually moving people over to new payment processor since January). Has anyone else had similar issue recently?
Edit: Just noticed this was discussed a bit a few weeks ago.
Paywall Klaxon
Not sure if this is common knowledge but purely by the dint of having fat thumbs I just found out double tapping on the Santander logo in the app quickly switches to discrete mode and fuzzes the £xxx balances
Yet another thing suggesting they want their UK business sold
That’s disappointing. I’ll have to consider my options after this. The fee-free spending overseas is helpful but at £3 a month I can get it free elsewhere (just prefer it coming from one account).
I can’t fathom how Edge Up account can be viable without the cashback though. What would you be paying £5 a month for? Once the cashback goes you’re not getting much back.
I’ll have to consider how much interest I’m getting on the edge saver compared to other places to see if it is more than the £3 fee. Will probably move my spending away from Santander for many things now.
Just got a letter in the app explaining the cashback is being culled.
Interestingly they state “due to increased costs of providing cashback”.
Given it’s a percentage and a fixed total, how? What cost has increased?
