Big tip, don’t try and check your credit report the day you turn 18. It won’t exist and you’ll end up with accounts at Experian, ClearScore and CreditKarma that won’t work as there’s no option to try and reverify. Also if I could go back in time I wouldn’t even bother opening accounts just to try them or collect cards you’d be surprise how much it complicates things. Also best to not try to borrow until you actually have a full time job and had income for at least 6-12 months. Obviously others may disagreee but this is my advice personally.
Please do explain this point.
I’d say it makes my life way easier as I can
a) Avoid hard checks for accounts once I’m 18
b) Get access to a load of savings accounts
c) Card designs
There is absolutely no harm in opening a bank account.
This was my thoughts as well, so I’m interested to hear their opinions on the matter.
Firstly please I am not criticising or condemning, I had done this so I’m just giving my own advice/opinion.
Opened accounts with the major banks and switched one and then lost years of good account history (didn’t realise this at the time). It just means a lot of customer profiles and accounts. Now I just use one account, all my money comes in and all my spending goes out of there. It makes it simple for banks to see my spending and current account turnover. In my experience, lots of bank transfers can make banks think they are regular payments so if your main bank assesses you for a credit card for example they may give you a lower limit. Lots of hard searches and inactive accounts can clog up your credit report, which in turn takes up to 6 years to clean up.
My advice is be intentional. Otherwise, enjoy what you’re doing, in practice it’s harmless yes, but it’s not fun to get in a sticky situation.
If you’re going to apply to all of them to get the cards, tick for an overdraft, want a credit card, then yes, that will have an impact.
If you just want to open an account and collect the card, it’s barely noticeable. I have a very good credit score and I’ve been through all of the banks to get the free money.
My only advice would be to keep one longstanding account, for me this is Lloyds and has been open since I was a child. I keep my Monzo account because that’s the one I want to use and the rest I’ll happily CASS to the next for another bonus. I still have accounts with Barclays and Natwest (I think it’s those two) that have a couple of quid in them and I’ll move them along when there’s the chance, but keeping/closing/moving them and opening a basic account with no overdraft elsewhere will make no difference to anything.
I’m sure I’ve had that option for ages.
Just checked. Have had it for absolutely ages.
You must be looking at something else, my iPad had the older app build and didn’t have the new option. Updated and it appeared.
Well I’m not. On android and I’ve had it for ages.
Well the Android app is a different app to the iOS app Carlo posted a screenshot of lol so that wouldn’t be as surprising.
Starling. Well, technically NatWest I’ve had the longest, but I want Starling to be my longstanding account. Alongside Monzo.
my ‘apply’ page was looking much like Carlo’s last night, and has a few extra things today. Not sure I’d ventured in there before so don’t know it that’s usual.
I can’t see the option to freeze international payments anywhere though.
The freeze international payments thing is there in the update notes
I think this is for transfer payments. It already had an international option for card payment controls.
ah, you’re quite right - I updated the Android version and it’s there now.
So, unless you close it, it will always be the longest - and I wouldn’t close it just because you want another account to be your longest.
The Ulster app has had the redesign for how accounts appear.
I’ve removed all traces of account and balance information from the image.
Hopefully, RBS and NatWest get the changes soon.
I’ve also noted that ‘insights’ on the RBS app has now been updated with better categories and images.
Ain’t a fan
I like it, was this an App Store update? Or just updated itself within the app?
It appeared after the recent update with the freezing international payments.
Looks like it’s being tested out on Ulster…maybe?
