Roaming charges to return. Quelle surprise. Brexit, the gift that keeps on taking.

Sadly I fear tethering may be next, I am not sure exactly if we have it implemented in our own laws directly or if its EU controlled legislation but the EU banned data discrimination basically which is why you can use your say 20GB contract’s data all as tethering data and not like the old days where you got 20GB of mobile data but 2GB of tethering and unlimited data would be mobile use only but you could tether for 10GB per month.

Guessing I’ll have to pay for homefi if they ever restricted it domestically.

ADSL would be a massive step backwards and costs more. (Bundled exchange where you can only use BT or Plusnet)

As much as I don’t like the EU it had very good consumer protection laws (a ban on non eurozone banks charging fx fees for transactions in euro would have been nice)

Even if you sign up to EE after 7th July, most plans you can add a smart benefit of the Roam Abroad add-on and get roaming for free. Even if you don’t, it’ll be Ā£10 for 30 days. People spend hundreds on their holiday, a Ā£10 add-on isn’t exactly going to bankrupt them. Yes, it used to be free but we lost.

There are other factors to consider when buying a plan, not just the roaming cost. The UK performance in your home or work location are probably more important than roaming costs.

I wish this was a bit easier to figure out. Even my own past experiences are out of date. I think I’ve been with EE for 2x 2-year contracts in a row now and I have little idea what the competition is like now

No, but something more to arrange and pay ā€œjust a little bit moreā€ for. Like the impending visa waiver requirement. All the little bits of friction, time and cost add up.

We all lost.

My hope is that the other networks will stick to free roaming and EE will reverse their decision. My expectation is that they’re all rubbing their hands and we’ll end up with remarkably similarly priced roaming add-ons available on each network.

The whole 99.?% coverage stats don’t help anyone. Yes, I can make a call, but can I do anything else, that’s what I care about.

I did this the moment I got the email! Paid off my device plan and gone to Three - found a 12 month sim only deal with unlimited data for £16 pm.

Just cancel without contact. I got my PAC code so I’ll pay the 30 days notice rather than keep the contract running.

Do you have a Refresh plan?

Just to say:
A) We dont know what the contracts after the 7th will include, its very possible the smart benefit is going away without an additional cost per month
B) The cost can be £10 but varies on contract and must be purchased before you go abroad otherwise your on the £2 a day if you forget or for example dont know about the new roaming charges because you expected it to be like it was for the last 3 years. I think its particularly bad they want you to pre-order the pass before going abroad. They may offer a pass but just double the charge because you didnt get it before you went on the plane, who knows though until the 7th.
C) Boris could have kept the free roaming agreement but he chose not too regardless of brexit. This was not for our benefit.

I think companies like o2 force you to take a refresh plan if you signed up from March 2020

If you signed up through MobilePhonesDirect since then then it’s still treated as sim only I believe.

Do you have two separate direct debits going out at the same time for O2?

You may still be able to leave - worth giving them a ring and seeing what they say.

You can only leave with out paying a termination fee on o2 if your tariff has over 25GB. If you are Refresh then you need to pay your device plan off in full at time you put in the cancellation request.

If you are on a tariff with under 25GB then you wont be able to cancel fee free, you will need to pay a termination fee as you arent materially affected.

Just be aware that Three no longer offer unlimited roaming abroad as I said earlier its now a very paultry 12GB.

Voda and O2 is 25GB

Wholly off topic but as someone who’s never paid for anything above 2Gb a month, some of the numbers being discussed here I find slightly staggering!

EE did the same to me to be fair many moons ago, but then I left due to their inept international billing, and not been able to sort it out even after 6mths so they let me leave…

Each Network has positives and negatives, just make sure EE etc works, but also look at some of the EE MVNO’s they are cheaper, such as BT Mobile etc
