Roaming Charge Return EU

Renewed my EE contract on the 20th for two years, I feel like a genius.

The Department of Health has technically received ÂŁ384,615,384ish per week extra for 2021/22, and an awful lot more in 2021/22.

It is less to do with Brexit though, and more this thing happening right now so probably won’t continue for 2022/23.

Damn… wish I was with O2 now :joy: Vodafone’s VeryMe rewards aren’t terrible - there are a few occasional useful deals like a free drink at Costa or free BBQ food at Tesco - but it still isn’t a patch on Priority. Three had a scheme called ‘wuntu’ (pronounced “One Two” (Three) I assume) which was fairly rubbish, but was discontinued all together at the end of 2019. They promised to relaunch with a better offering at the beginning of 2020 but there’s still no sign of anything!

Is that free bacon roll a weekly thing with O2…?

Started a month or two ago now, and yep, every week. You can redeem once and choose whether you do Friday or Saturday morning. I think it covers bacon roll, sausage roll, and similar vegan options too.

It seems to have replaced the previously weekly free Caffè Nero, which I used religiously back when I was in the office.

There’s currently three months free Duolingo plus, and a £10 eBay coupon if you sell something for more than £10 which look to be the best of what else is currently available.

The weekly coffee, and now greggs, and early concert ticket buying are probs the best in my opinion, with the occasional ones being a bit more hit and miss.

Oh, I didn’t realise they’d removed the weekly free Caffe Nero drink - that’s the one I remember using the most back when I was with them. :frowning:

Got the email from O2 saying there is no early termination fee if you leave because of this, and Three are doing some cracking deals at the moment

I only just noticed when I checked the app! It was def there recently so I am assuming it was swapped out for Greggs. Similar cost, weekly reward available two days, etc etc.

I pay ÂŁ6pm with Plusnet atm, so will be interesting to see their plans for when I hope to resume travelling in 2022.

Three has reduced the amount of roaming data you get from 20GB to 12GB as well with new charges if you go over. Obviously if you contract is < 12GB per month you just get your normal amount.

I expect all network to tweak the charges for new tariffs for the new iphone or samsung phone as well.

Do you have a source for this?

Looking on their website and it’s still 20GB within Europe:

What’s our fair usage policy?

In our Go Roam in Europe destinations, you can use up to 20GB of your data allowance at no extra cost. Use over this fair use limit, is subject to a surcharge. There are no fair use limits for calls made or texts sent within our Go Roam in Europe destinations.

You’re in a Go Roam Around the World destination if you have:
A data allowance greater than 12GB, you can use up to this amount of data a month at no extra cost. Data use above this will not be allowed.

Unlimited texts you can send up to 5000 texts back to the UK (landline and mobile numbers) per month.

3000 or more minutes included in your allowance you can use up to 3000 minutes on calls back to the UK.

I did see it mentioned elsewhere but need to trawl through my history.

If you use 12GB on holiday then you probably should have just stayed at home.

But anyone who is switching, make sure you use Quidco/TCB.

Ah found it here:

“Following a review of our fair use policy, we are making some changes to our Go Roam policy in the EU to bring it in line with our Go Roam Around the World fair use policy. This means from July 1 our fair use limit for data while in the EU will reduce from 20GB per month to 12GB.”

You forget though that not everybody using their phone abroad is on holiday, there are lots of circumstances where you could end up needing more than 12GB, but taking out a local SIM is a worse deal or has hurdles like requiring a local address or bank account.

Why? 12GB is a huge amount to use while you’re on holiday, especially as the hotel will have wifi anyway.

“I wont use 12GB so no one else needs it” when you have unlimited contracts and get used to actually using data all the time 12GB is nothing. Hell 20GB meant managing it a bit.
Hotels often have wifi but its very often a car crash and quite a few hotels like to charge for proper speeds and proper wifi.
This is before you get to using your phone when out and about with maps/gps/imessage. We dont sit on our phones all day but we use them fully when on holiday to get the most out of the holiday.

In the UK I burn about 80-120GB of data per month pre covid.

But you’re away for a week? Two weeks probably at most. If you’re backpacking for months and it’s your only connection then that’s a bit different, but not really a holiday.

20GB in a week is over 80GB a month, while you’re on holiday?! At home when you’re commuting and streaming at home that’s a different kettle of fish.

There are plenty of reasons why someone might want access the same high level of data that they use while at home, especially when they don’t have access to their home WiFi for an extended period of time.
Hotel wifi is notoriously bad.

Can’t speak for other people but when on holiday I still like listening to music, downloading and listening to audiobooks, I still might want to watch something while enjoying a lie in, and I usually end up taking more photos and videos than normal, which I definitely want to be backed up online as I take them.

Another thing to note is that not all travelling is for holidays either, a lot of mine is for work and that’s where being able to use my phone as a hotspot is incredibly useful and data caps can really become an issue.

At home wifi is reliable and fast, abroad it is not (depending on where)
YOU may not use much data but blurping out no one needs it is very small minded.
Ever since roaming became part and parcel of travel for free we have used large amounts of data without having to hope from wifi place to wifi place. Yeah if you sit in the hotel the whole holiday then it may be less of a problem but we certainly do especially when out and about. Also we tend to do 10 - 14 day holidays like many others do.

I do use lots of data. Just because I think worrying about only having 20GB for a holiday is excessive, doesn’t mean it relates to what I have or use.

Pre-Covid I would easily use 30/40GB a month. That’s not as high as you but it’s still a lot more than most.

You’re the edge case that needs hundreds of GB of data to enjoy your holiday, the majority of people will not be impacted by this and the news stories everywhere are blowing it out of proportion for clicks.

Thats fairly naive. Data usage is only going up every year and I am not an edge case, you may like sitting around a pool all day but many many others dont. If no one is using 20GB a month then there would be no need to change the limit.
I get you dont understand it but the limit wont affect you, it will affect others and rather than being dismissive and saying silly things like needing hundreds of GB’s to enjoy the holiday you should really.
We enjoy our holidays, we enjoy it more when we dont have to hope from wifi point to wifi point trying to get data when we are enjoying them, we use lots of data all the time, in 5 years time the amount of data we use will be even more.
You dont, thats fine, but dont trying to imply that we are crappy for using our data.
I dont get why some people (especially brexiteers who want to make this seem like a good thing, not saying you are one though) have the attitude because it doesnt affect them directly it doesnt matter, its such a small minded way to think.
