POLL: Should Monzo issue chequebooks?

With the pots feature, it’d be useful to be able to allocate money to a cheques pot to minimise that issue

And hot coral blotting paper for our fountain pens (that will bring back memories for those who used the pink blotting paper in Lloyd’s each day) so we don’t smudge our cheques

Here, TV funny man Reg Varney from the smash hit series On The Buses inaugurates Monzo’s latest invention, a Cheque Retrieval Automated Printer. Installed at motorway service stations and Wimpy bars across the country, these Hot Coral terminals will use their in-built daisy wheel printers to deliver a personalised cheque to any account holder within a week. Book an in-app appointment where Monzo will take the payee and amount details, and send your payment to the state-of-the-art computerised network and your cheque will be printed after seven days. Simply identify yourself with the machine, using a pre-punched card slip (Monzo will provide these upon request) and your cheque will download and print in approximately 30 minutes (a 3% charge will be levied on machines used outside of the United Kingdom)

Varney said “This new equipment is superb, and will really help with my accounting. The notification that my cheque is ready appears on my phone instantly, and I’m able to send it anywhere in the world for the price of an International Air Fare. Keep up the innovation Monzo!”

I remember going to one of the early cash machines with my dad - you could only get money in a few fixed amounts and it was delivered in a little plastic clip that you took off and slid back in to a slot in the machine.

It seemed so futuristic!

My thought straight away. Might be because I like cheques. I got an new account once to get fancier cheques for the ‘once in a blue moon’ I use them.

Maybe we need a ‘design a cheque for Monzo’ competition!

The cheques we had at Drummonds and Coutts were always so much more impressive than regular RBS

I’m another one that needs cheques - only a couple a year, but when I use them it is because there isn’t really another secure option (A previous poster mentioned school photos - paying for them by writing my card no and CVC on a bit of paper and handing it to the school who then hand it to the company makes me very nervous)

I don’t think that cheque books should be issued, but it would be useful to be able to obtain individual cheques somehow. Cheques are a complete PITA and should be banned, but while people require payment by cheque there needs to be some means of sourcing them.

(A previous poster mentioned school photos - paying for them by writing my card no and CVC on a bit of paper and handing it to the school who then hand it to the company makes me very nervous)

It’s also a clear PCI violation and would leave the company unable to process credit card payments at all if their payment processor found out.

Heck, we’re not even allowed to write a number down to take it across the office to enter it into the secure payment terminal… our heroic support people memorise the numbers!

If I came across that I’d be tempted to remind the school that if your card was subsequently used fraudulently the school could be on the hook for it.

The last time I actually wrote a cheque was to renew my passport at the passport office, before that then you’re talking about at least a year

(handy tip, if you write a cheque and send off your passport renewal application at any UK Passport Office [do not renew at the Post Office], you’ll get your renewed passport in 2-3 working days (you do not need to pay extra to have your application processed quicker  ) )

but you can pay them by card…no cheques needed

Not at the one I go to though, I did ask them

What a loaded poll for no purpose, is the point of this thread to get the No’s to deny a feature just because they don’t use it?

I just don’t see the point.

I know Monzo will likely never offer it, but I don’t see the need for a poll as if it has any effect on the people who DONT need it. Whys it bother you so much that a few people may want it and ask? What is the poll trying to achieve? Why such a loaded Poll Question -

Don’t need a cheque book? Cool. No need to shove it everywhere or go out of your way to push an agenda to further push the idea of never having one.

Maybe when you have kids and they are at school, or you deal with Shares or anything else your suddenly find we’re not quite in the paradise of never needing one. In an ideal world - sure. But there is still uses cases before we all blow off that its 2017 and we shouldnt need it.

l renew it online. Fill in the form online and they send you the completed form prefilled to sign and return. OK so it was 5 years ago but you filled in your card details and paid that way, though cheque was an option. There were certain issues with Maestro and foreign cards but most UK Visa and Mastercard were accepted. Maybe they have gone backwards since then due to department restructuring

No. Although I use about 8 cheques a year, mostly to small service providers such as my Osteopath and formembership to local societies. I will use the heritage account that I will have to maintain for other services not provided by Monzo.

Cheques will eventually vanish but I suspect it will take another few years to do so.

I suspect this is also the only reason I will keep my Lloyds Current Account: to deposit cash and cheques.

I’d say yes, because you still need to write the occasional cheque out.

But perhaps cheque books could be issued on request with a system for printing cheques as you need them?
That way those who use them a lot can get a book, everyone else can just print the occasional one.

I’m not sure about the practicalities of self printed cheques though.

The app could print the cheque?

(Then I can have mine on vellum if I get to the paper tray fast enough)

Why move the people to the secure payment terminal when you could move the secure payment terminal to the people?

Multiple people and only one terminal (because having more than one would step us up to a higher level of PCI, which wouldn’t be cost effective).

Then they are truly heroic :+1:
