If it wasn’t sneaky, you’d put the opt-out button on the “we’ve signed you up” form. Maybe copy Amazon and have a second page barrier repeating the explanation that it’s free and you won’t be charged.

I get why you’ve done it, but the lack of choice is a bit contradictive to the “high standards of ethical behaviour”.

I think people have said everything they could about this.

Monzo hasn’t explained the offer clearly and should have had an opt-out, but this isn’t going to lead to anyone being charged money.

That is essentially all there is to this.

To be fair to Monzo (and I am not trying to defend, I personally wouldn’t want this/would let it run it’s course etc) they’re just doing what a number of companies do - playing on peoples bias (I couldn’t remember the specific one the other day but I found it)

If Monzo did this intentionally, then at best it’s a clever use of behavioural economics. If they did it un-intentionally, then it’s a lucky attempt at getting more people on plus (or not, they’re not forcing anyone!)

It is what it is, I highly doubt anyone is going to say anything either way more than “well, it’s just free and you don’t have to have it at the end/can cancel before” ) but who knows

Does Spotify bulk add people to premium who have not asked to do so? I’ve always been a premium customer so maybe they do and I’m just unaware.

No, they ask for payment details and tell you if you don’t canx at the end it’ll charge you (as do Apple)

But that’s not my point, I’ve already said I think Monzo should’ve given people the option not to accept/not done it in the first place but here we are

I’ve just had this when I opened the app today too. It went straight to the splash screen which I must have tapped without reading and just saw I was on a Plus trial.

It’s free with no auto sign-up after so I don’t mind too much, but does feel a bit shady in terms of trying to get people hooked. I do most of my spending excluding bills from my joint account so I’d never sign up to this. If I had the option I would had said no thanks to the trial.

Would people be as angry if they said there was going to be no TransferWise fees for a month?

I get that no one has asked for the trial but equally no one is being told they must use it.

The problem I had, I opened the Monzo app when I was in a shop, scrolled/tapped past the message and then when I got home I had all these new features.

I was so confused, then I found out about Plus. I then didn’t know if all these features were due to Plus or new ones I’ve just missed. There were little indication.

I understand why the majority of people who are ok with this have ‘investor’ tags, we ALL want Monzo to be successful esp if you are an investor.

But they need to do it in a ethical way, which they do 99% of the time. I feel like this is the 1%.

Being initially unsure or confused about what was/is included is fair enough, especially if you’ve no longer got the initial message on screen, but in its place there’s a whole new tab indicating exactly what’s included in Plus the trial.

That combined with a cancel button at the bottom of said tab, the unlocked features being entirely optional, and no auto subscription means that I don’t see any part of it as being unethical, and that has nothing to do with me being an investor.

I personally don’t really see it as unethical, more poorly explained and without a choice from the user to opt-out.

The poorly explained thing is the thing causing the problems here as people simply don’t understand what the trial is.

No, people would be happy, and thats not the same thing. Much like a free movie isn’t the same thing that @Revels used.

Again the Wise transfer is a one off event not something you are being tied into by using the features whilst they are free.

If you used the Virtual cards you are hooked into paying each month to continue support that functionality.

Whilst at the end of the theoretical Wise promo they continue as they were before.

What you’re describing is people realising virtual cards are useful and worth paying for. Why is this wrong?

Virtual cards are useful.

Taking your main competitor Starling they are completely free.

Free vs having to pay £5 if you wanted that with Monzo

My actual point i was making is a free transfer or a free movie is a one off event that isnt affected by the trial/promo ending.

Whilst trying out paid features that require an ongoing fee to use once it ends is completely different.

Keep editing, adding, moving the goal-posts to try and support your argument all you want. You don’t agree with this, we got that about 50 posts ago.

What if I wanted to use the virtual card once and never again? In the same way that many people do? Then it’s exactly the same as a movie, you’re using it and then never again. Your life continues. No on-going fee.

They might be free with Starling, but not everyone banks with Starling.

I didn’t realise there was a limit to how many times im allowed to update a post, or post in a thread.

My edits are always correcting typos or adding further information. They aren’t changing what is being said unless i actually add an Edit: to make that clear.

The problem with it being free with competition is that gives it an edge over Monzo.

From a neutral point if all the benefits on the Plus can be done for free by a competitor (and no not having to hunt around) then thats bad news for Monzo.

Whilst you’ve pointed out a few times that £5 is trivial to you, its still £5 vs £0.

For the 1000th time, they cannot.

Admin update: I’ve updated the Topic title as I’ve had to merge a few topics in here so wanted to make it more clear where the feedback can be placed

In your opinion.

My opinion is that although they might be free in Starling, I prefer the monzo app/ecosystem/experience.

I, and seemingly hundreds of thousands of other people prefer it to the extent that we would rather pay £5pm to have the features available in the monzo ecosystem vs having them for free in Starling’s.
