Not a clue. Might be a mastercard requirement. Still pretty prevalent in the US. If you come across a shop that won’t accept Apple Pay, thus requiring the physical card, nine times in ten u gotta swipe.

Given that there is actually a real design now, there is not really any more room for wild or major speculation, so I am going to close this in favour of the topic that @TomMills has kindly linked to above.
Do go there for light speculation about “Easter eggs” and texture though!
