Hello - I had a payment taken from my monzo account as an ‘online transaction’. However, the card used for payment is expired. How has the payment managed to be authorised?
When was the payment made on the card, and when did it expire? Have you replaced the card since?
Welcome
Monzo tries to update merchants with the new card details automatically, so it may have been made on the replacement card.
If you’re unsure about the transaction you can click on it and click on “Something wrong, get help!” and it should give you some guidance on what you do next to get to a resolution, if needed
Was it a CPA (Continuous Payment Authority)? I understand there are circumstances with CPAs where merchants are able to claim payment from expired cards.
ETA: if you haven’t already done so, find the payment in your Monzo feed, tap it, scroll to the bottom and tap ‘Something wrong? Get help’ and follow the most appropriate flow for your problem.
The payment is a repeat payment I started a year or so ago. I couldn’t cancel it so changed cards (I’m in touch with financial Ombudsman about it). The payment has been declined since due to card being expired. But today Monzo allowed it. Not sure how that can happen…
I’ll check that out. Thank you!
Go to the site/thing in question, and check what the card details are they’ve got assigned to them. Monzo are part of the Mastercard Vendor Notification System, which is used for updating card details with online companies that use it etc
So it’s potentially that they got updated when your new card got confirmed.
Super helpful. Thank you
I understand now! Thank you
you can contact Monzo and ask them to cancel the CPA. (sorry about the caps below )
REMEMBER: IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO CANCEL CONTINUOUS PAYMENT AUTHORITIES DIRECTLY WITH YOUR CARD ISSUER
Just to note I’ve had to do this in the past (This is where virtual cards are a win btw on plus) but it was easy and it helped stop the payments.
Monzo really needs to find a way to expose CPAs in the app - and let us cancel them - imo.
they have the perfect spot in the app for it under the ‘Subscriptions & Direct Debits’ area on the Payments tab
Thanks everyone! They will block the merchant and when my new card arrives there is an option to opt out of the continuous payments set up, apparently.
I can’t see the option at the moment but it apparently comes up when you click ‘activate card’.
Is this on android?
Over here on iOS you have to manually enter the number.
Yeah it is, I didn’t think Apple allowed anyone to do anything with it’s NFC capabilities, unless that’s changed recently.
I’m not a dev, but I do believe that this is technically possible.
The reason I say this is because the South Western Railway app is able to read my ITSO smartcard and load tickets onto it, so in my eyes this is another app parity issue.
Yes, it seems to be app parity issue as Apple have significantly opened up the use of the NFC chip some years ago
If it has gone through on an expired card sounds like the merchant has presented the transaction without an authorisation or make a second presentment on an existing auth which in some circumstances IIRC can still go through on an expired card.
However as has already been suggested when you replace a card you get a prompt to ask whether you want to update your card with merchants who support it and if you’ve accepted that then it may have automatically updated with the merchant.
Best to get in touch with chat to find out exactly what’s happened and what the options are.
