Ahah I got curious then I actually searched if PayPal owned paypoint😂

Is anyone able to tell me the technicalities of why this would be the case?

The chip on the debit card needs to include some code in them to support full functionality at the post office and this is currently missing.

I believe the current cards can actually support some limited functionality at Post Offices.

However, it all comes down to Monzo not agreeing commercial terms with the Post Office.

I seem to remember Starling saying that their new Teal cards would work at the post office but their old Purple (and much nicer ones) would not. Something do with chip (again IIRC)

Edit:
Also mentioned here Starling Discussion & Feedback - #1382 by chrisgreen and here Introducing: Cash deposits at the Post Office - Starling Bank

No idea what the technical reason is though

https://youtu.be/4nM0AKYHLNg gives some interesting insight into what a card chip contains (from 5:40 onwards)

And how would that affect you?

The newsagent is the one that will be left with the bill. Just like the people with the gas and electric - their cards will have still been topped up.

You’re doing a lot of scaremongering on here recently - it’s not helpful or nice at all.

Nothing stops them saying that at all. Just like nothing stops me from saying the same to you, or anyone else.

BUT as has been said, you’d expect a receipt for these kind of transactions (I’d insist on one).

Anyway, what’re you doing depositing money? You’d be better off not withdrawing so much in the first place if you’re having to pay it all back in.

Have you ever actually paid money in using paypoint? Yes it takes 10 mins to credit, but you get an immediate notification telling you they’ve got it and that it’ll be 10 mins.

Edit:

So you have used it before :man_shrugging:

And never been given asked for a receipt once. :man_facepalming:

The one time I did it when someone paid me back in cash and paid me a few quid over I tried using paypoint at a co op near my work.

Worked fine and was given a receipt. Did say can you put 50 quid on this pls mate just swipe it on the paypoint.

The 2 times I’ve used PayPoint, I told the cashier I wanted a top up for X amount and handed my Monzo card.
Had the money instantly both times.
Saying the words ‘top up’ most definitely made the experience a lot smoother, and in fairness, I only knew to say that after reading about issues on here before hand.

Personally I’d still like to see Post Office incorporated too, as we could then withdraw cash too and it more replaces the need for a branch with foreign currency etc too. I understand however, that the Post Office could quite frankly be being awful negotiators and demanding too high a fee from Monzo.

It would either involve charges or Monzo joining the link atm network. (Post offices can provide the same services as a ATM on the link network, this is how nationwide only works for withdrawals)

This would need card replacement for both and link charges a higher interchange than MasterCard so Monzo are unlikely to do it.

Post office deposits would cost more than PP so expect the fee to be higher or Monzo plus only.

Just paid in cash for the first time snd had a really good experience.

Noticed you have to word it like “can I load £160 onto my card please” and the guy knew what he was doing.

Does anyone know what the 10 min buffer is about?

Its probably pay point earning a little bit of interest until they put it on your account

I don’t think it will be that, it’s probably a processing time such as contacting the servers required or even incase the clerk enters the wrong amount he can quickly cancel

I have a monese card as well the last time I topped it up with cash at paypoint it went on straight away

This is not how interest works. Interest is calculated on settled balances overnight, not by the minute.

According to the blog post written when paypoint cash deposit was introduced…

You’ll see the money in your account 10 minutes later, once PayPoint have checked everything’s okay with the deposit

Actually Becky Plus is 1 free cash deposit every 30 days.

Not sure where you are getting this misleading information from?
