Paying Cash At PayPoint

Hiya,

I went to my local shop to try putting money into my Monzo account using PayPoint. We’re pretty good pals and we figured it out together.

All the cashier needs to do is.

  1. Swipe card your card.

  2. Then it comes up with how much money you want to put in. They select your desired amount.

  3. You give the money over.

  4. If they need to give you change there is another step. Which I believe is simple but I didn’t need to do this.

  5. You’ll get a notification immediately. The cashier gives you a receipt.

  6. 10 mins later your get a notification that’s it’s now in your account.

If anyone wants me to take pictures of the PayPoint screen and explain this in more detail just let me know.

Cheers
Callum

Just to add here - I went to put cash in at my local coop and the lady behind the toll said the usual “sorry we don’t do that here” but I persisted and she called a manager over who put it on straight away. Really more a reflection of coop training than anything else…

I actually think that PayPoint is the right decision. They are plentiful (more than post offices) and have shorter lunchtime queues.

Maybe from Monzo’s side they could have a helpful screen by screen process flick through that could be shown to the cashier assistant? This would help them through the process if required.

They already have this.

I believe they worked with Paypoint in the beginning and sent out an information pack. The person from Monzo who said this never came back on to update us though so we don’t know if it was ever done or how successful it was :pensive:

I know exactly what you mean, but you only need to swype the card on the paypoint device and it will prompt the rest.

Yeah I know - but I’m suggesting a step further. I.e actual screenshots of “press here”

I’ve never seen a paypoint machine but my experience was that the cashier said flat out no and I had to persist and get a manager over. Maybe some friendly screenshots and prompts on your phone shown to the cashier would help things along.

I’ve just deposited at a PayPoint successfully for the first time ever. I’ve tried and failed many times before, however the corner shop a few buildings away has just started PayPoint, I went in and asked to top up my card with £50 and they did it straight away, no question, no issues. It looked easy for them.

If it went that simply every time then I’d say PayPoint for deposits is brilliant.

If only it hadn’t failed for me so many times in the past

Maybe that place had a newer terminal or had the training more recently.

Never had an issue myself I would like to add

I’d guess probably both because as far as I’m aware, PayPoint is a new addition to that store.

Either way, it was nice for it to finally work, especially as smoothly as it did

I take it that even after 18months of hopeless pay point kiosks, nothing has changed?

The ‘this is just the beginning’ was clearly just a holding card.

Once again (16 months after my first poor experience) I once again tried to pay in money today, three paypoint shops later I am still sat here with my money… no one would accept it, and one of them even said they’d been told in writing by HQ not to accept cash payments.

I don’t think it’s an unfair ask for a bank to at least to get their commando chain right?

yes I went into homebase today and the greeter to allow you into the store said we are only taking card payments today - no cash will be accepted for your purchases :man_shrugging:

Is it possible this is a lockdown rule? Manually handling lots of cash poses some risk.

A number of businesses rightly or wrongly have been told from there higher ups that cash will no longer be handled during the current crisis. If you’ve got an Asda near you they usually always have a terminal available and they’re certainly accepting cash payments at the moment

This is the reason I still keep a high street bank account. They allow me to scan my cheques in on my phone and also pay cash in at the post office with no charge.

I can’t say I use either feature often, it’s just useful to have an account which lets me do it if I need to. I sense this recession could largely bring on the end of cash transactions as we know it. People will be aware of their reliance on bank accounts throughout this pandemic and businesses can innovate further to remove cash entirely from their workflow if they don’t see it being used

Not if they’re part of a chain, or even an independent, who’s taken that decision for the moment.

It’s up to the paypoint retailer, if they take the view that handling cash isn’t safe or don’t have the required PPE, then they are absolutely at right not to accept it

It’s just a shame that Monzo think this is an acceptable solution…

Has any other bank stopped allowing cash deposits because if COVID-19? I’m going to guess not.

Haven’t used other banks for cash deposits since before March, but I would imagine that banks with high street branches (and the Post Office) would insist on cash being properly bagged so they can weigh it (without handling it until necessary). That would be their reasonable step to mitigate risk.

There’s nothing wrong with corner shop retailers deciding that their best step to mitigate risk is to not handle cash. Not only that, I fully support anyone who decides to take that step (what with most of our money now being metal or plastic, not paper, that means there is risk there, as those are the surfaces the virus can live longest on).

Perhaps it’s another indication that signing a deal with Paypoint wasn’t the best choice, but it’s wrong to say that Monzo have stopped allowing cash deposits, because it’s not their choice to make (and because Paypoint vendors, not being banks with bags and all that, are absolutely in their right to decide not to take cash).

Just Use the Post Office…dammit!

Here’s a list of the banks you can use at the Post Office…

Starling are wise enough to be on it… so why not Monzo?

The cost and effort of replacing everyone’s card would be one reason.
