Overseas Bank Account

Did anyone else not receive their Schwab cheques?

Received the debit card over a month ago now.

Yes seems to be. They also seem to offer an international account with extra benefits including Worldwide Travel Insurance, Priority Pass. Interestingly, the £20 monthly fee is waived when you maintain a balance of £10,000. Not sure if uk residents would be eligible.

To your UK address.

The checks take ages to arrive.

Their debit card is now a Discover/Diners card, making it less useful overseas. Since US banks require a local mailing address, does Capital One put their own one in the system? I’m pretty sure banks are allowed to have an overseas residential address but the correspondence must be in the US.

I do not, unfortunately no one told me about this during application. Hopefully I’ll eventually get to that level - but I don’t get why I’d save that much (or invest that much) with HSBC. They’re a bank, not the most competitive on investments (or savings…).

I got a reply in a few weeks - they probably need some justification. Mine was that… I work across the border. Having a credit card denominated in RMB/HKD makes sense.

I don’t have a HKID, I do have a residence permit for the Mainland and I have documentation to prove where I live/my work status and address etc. Hopefully would be enough.

I’ve held off for now as I can still effectively save in the UK (and I’ve found some slightly more attractive ways to invest) at the moment. Realistically if I won’t put money in there, I don’t want to hold a thousand in there. I might try get a SC or Citi account if I’m ever in Shenzhen (quick trip across the border, won’t take more than a few hours) but probably won’t go out of my way to leave Shanghai for that.

No, Capital One didn’t require a US address. I gather that they had to use 00000 or 99999 as the zip code. Heard about it a few years back.

Probably a limitation in their system that expected everyone to have a US formatted zip code. Like my HSBC Australia profile has a 9999 postcode.

Less useful now, but I wonder if it’s a sign that Capital One are going to roll Discover out more generally worldwide?

They might do but it won’t make much sense in the Uk compared to Canada. The only countries that Discover was ever issued in are Ecuador and Russia.

Nah completely agree re not holding that amount with HSBC, thankfully money in is the qualifying criteria in Aus, so although I do have some investments with HSBC it’s not enough to meet Premier criteria alone.

Mainland permit should be fine, to be honest as long as you have proof of ID/address it should be ok. I only use HK’s accounts for convenience atm, US and Singapore are the most important ones for me, right now.

Good luck, you might as well! HSBC have never called me from anywhere, it’s all been email correspondence (other than applying for a HSBC US credit card, where I had to call them). They may have tried, I miss 99% of my calls, but it hasn’t stopped anything.

Apparently I missed a call from them yesterday . No missed calls on my end though so not too sure.

They’ve emailed me and asked for clarification on my part time work, and also how much I want to save in the account every month. So hopefully they can get back to me today.

If you’ve any relatives in Australia, that’s a plus.

I’ve just been given a referral code for Britline (€50 each, plus another €50 in the unlikely event you can switch an existing French bank account). Would pay the fees for nearly the first year. I’ll stick it in the referral thread.

Ive looked cant find your referral

It’s under Credit Agricole Britline:

If it costs €7 a month that makes it €84 a year so the €50 only covers slightly more than half of the yearly cost.

You’re right, I was thinking in terms of pounds for the bonus instead of euros!

I holiday in South of France maybe twice a year. Is that a good enough reason for a Britline account?
