Ok, sorry, yes, I’m being tongue-in-cheek, but I really don’t understand where you see the difference!!!
I’m coming from the position that I want to understand why people are being alarmed into leaving Monzo by this announcement, because I don’t believe they should be. If it can be understood where the problems are then maybe the messaging or explanations can be improved and everyone would be happier and not have to change things or cancel their accounts!
What is the actual ‘feature’ you’d like to keep? Something being a prepaid card is a technicality, not a feature (though it can limit what features can be offered).
Well really it is your choice, in that you have a choice to upgrade to the current account (which is what Monzo have always said they’d be doing) or you can carry on using your card until the Prepaid service is ended?
Perhaps the answer is to avoid the term ‘current account’ in future marketing communications about the requirement to upgrade. It seems, for some reason, to carry some negative connotations in some people’s minds.
I specifically signed up with Monzo in order to use the Pre-Paid Debit Card (I don’t want another full bank account) and so it is incredibly annoying to discover a month later that you are going to discontinue it. Luckily I haven’t closed my Caxton FX account and so will continue to use the Caxton pre-paid debit card instead. Whilst Monzo may want to become a fully fledged bank, it should also know what its customers want - I am sure many of us only want the Monzo pre-paid card!
I do not want to have a Current Account. It brings in many features I do not want and is something more I did not sign up for. Not being given this option to continue and being forced to do this seems rather harsh.
“Sign up for this or goodbye”
Makes me wonder what they would pull on me if I ever did sign up for the Current Account. I have lost trust in it.
This reminds me of how Google lost a lot of respect when they forced people to sign up to Google+ to have a Google account on YouTube. People hated being pushed into something.
Completely turns me off Monzo. No one likes being made to do things.
These situations are not the same. The former only happened after YouTube was purchased by Google (natch). However, signing up for Mozno was always under the understanding that it was a Beta product working towards a Current Account offering.
If they’d one day given everyone on the prepay card their own personal account number and sort code (without people having to do anything to get it) to allow the transfer of money in from other banks, would you have had the same reaction?
That was not the case. Google backed out of doing as people hated being made to have a G+ account. It is not used anymore. They did it in the hopes of merging everything into one account…
I did not sign up to Monzo wishing for a Current account. I signed up wanting an easy to use App and Card. My family also signed up for this for these reasons. Maybe you did, but I and many people I know did not sign up for this. You should not assume so much.
I’m still not understanding what the ‘current account part’ is. These are just words, have no impact on how the card & app work. You still have an easy to use app and card.
That’s just a name though, and doesn’t imply any more formality, fees, or obligations over the card you already have?
I also signed up for App and Card, I have now been given more things to potentially use, but I don’t have to use any of them.
I really don’t understand.
Well, just leave it then. I do not want it. I am happy with what I have and I do not want to be forced to upgrade. If it is not an upgrade, and is exactly the same… why make me do it?
Believe what you want, but this is not a sudden change of direction that Monzo is “pulling on” you. They’ve been consistent all along, prepaid has always been presented as a stopgap. If you don’t want to transfer it to the current account, that’s your choice.
