Wot @adztaylor said… (way better worded than my response above! )
This is actually an interesting debate. I have it on good authority that some of the legacy banks have been experimenting with notifications, and early adopters have been complaining that their transactions are not sufficiently realtime.
I personally want to receive notifications as soon as each transaction happens. Since I don’t want to be disturbed overnight, I switch on Do Not Disturb. However, I can see that some other users may prefer not to do that, since it might prevent other important notifications from getting through to them.
I agree that the ideal solution would be Monzo allowing customers to set preferences for when they wish to receive notifications. However, it’s not just a question of whether this is good for the customer or aligns to business strategy. It’s about the relative priority of delivering this functionality compared with other functionality customers may be requesting or that the business wants/needs to deliver.
On that basis, I can’t see it being delivered anytime soon.
On Android I just have the phone set to automatically go into DND overnight, but manually allow apps that I deem important enough to wake me up. Calls will also cone through, but only if someone makes trusted calls within 5 minutes.
I’d much rather put the entire phone on DND and manage the few exceptions using built in capabilities of the phone than have to micro manage the notifications in each and every app. Let’s say I have a change of circumstances - one change to the time the entire phone goes DND, or update the notifications schedule in every app? I know which makes more sense to me.
So you think the majority of Monzo customers want to be woken at 3 a.m. to be told a monthly direct debit has come out of their account, seriously? Every month? Every direct debit?
I think you’re missing the point. Everyone in here has explained what you need to do so that you won’t be disturbed by them.
This doesn’t just apply to Monzo but Facebook, my investment app and a whole bunch of others send notifications ad hoc. They’re instant because that’s what notifications were invented for.
What if you worked nights and actually wanted notifications at 3am? Instead of asking Monzo to reinvent the wheel, use your phones DND settings to set it exactly how you want. Easy
If you don’t understand DND or need some help configuring it just ask
I have the prefect answer. Close your Monzo account and move to another bank that doesn’t offer real-time instant notifications. Simples!
No.
But as has been pointed out, and I’m presuming most other people have figured out, there are ways to stop that happening built right into your smartphone.
I’m sorry for your circumstances but this is not the right solution for everyone/majority.
Wait so if you’re on iOS, why don’t you just turn on DND and contact that you need to get notifications for at 3am in the morning ? that way you can make sure Monzo or any other apps don’t bother you at that time, but still get the important contacts notifications through that you need ?
- Edit: got the apps exclusion mixed up with screen time. You can still get notifications from specific contacts even with DND on though.
How do you do that on iOS?
DND it’s not a difficult concept.
You getting woken at 3am is your fault, not Monzo
With contacts you can set within the DND settings, I got the apps bit mixed up with screen time. I’ll edit the post
In Screen time, you can set a time where it turns off access for your apps, kinda like DND but a step further where you’ll need a passcode to access those apps (so notifications don’t come through either). But unlike DND you can then exclude some apps form that screen time time frame so you can still interact with those apps freely and get notifications
So instead of being able to set one app which wakes me up when all the others rarely do I have to set dozens of apps?
With Screen Time you can pick and choose
I suspect the majority either don’t sleep with their phone, or turn DND on.
If you need this feature immediately, the only answer is to use an Android device (I think). Otherwise you’ll need to wait until Monzo introduce it.
Monzo don’t react all that quickly, and I’m not sure if it’s possible (I can’t recall any other iOS app which offers the feature, but I’ve never looked for it, because I don’t need it).
Edit: Also, you could turn notifications off at night for Monzo and turn them back on again in the morning.
My phone is on silent at night. The 1 buzz of a notification doesn’t wake me but a text message or phone call does
“….rarely do…” but they WILL wake you if they send a notification so this isnt an issue with Monzo, it could be any APP which sends you a notification so as many others have said, its something you can fix yourself in the OS.
Help me understand. What apps do you want to wake you up in the middle of the night?
Muting this thread now.
Love discussions, but OP is willfully ignoring advice. Not very constructive. Have fun y’all!!
That would be one I hadn’t thought of - Although I also sleep with DND on.
