Not eligible for Joint account - Monzo investor, premium payer and early adopter

The option is only hidden if you’re not eligible.

It’s quite clear that joint accounts still exist, we see this time and time again when someone decides to pipe up on the forum.

People aren’t eligible for whatever reason, case closed, move on to a bank that will provide the service you are looking for.

I really think this sort of post is unhelpful and unconstructive. It doesn’t add anything to the conversation, is disrespectful to people who ask genuine questions, and really doesn’t encourage new members.

There’s nothing wrong with someone popping on to ask a question. There’s nothing wrong in offering Monzo constructive feedback. Please don’t try and shut the conversation down.

But we don’t really need a thread a week, the think-piece replies, a poll, conspiracy theories, faux outrage and everything else that goes along with it.

Feel how you like, that’s my opinion. I’m not looking for you to agree with me one bit, I don’t need your approval or likes. All that happens is another circular conversation about joint accounts

Then don’t reply. That’s always an option. The tone of a lot of the responses to well meaning topics on here can often be, in my view, hostile even if well intentioned.

Look, not everyone is a regular. We have a choice: make this place exclusively for a smaller and smaller clique, or to encourage additional voices. I choose the latter.

And the doomsday attitude doesn’t help either.

It it is what it is. I’m sure this will all come around again soon enough and then one day maybe Monzo relax the criteria and more people that want a joint account will get them.

Before December I could apply without issues. Since the last update I’m no longer allowed.

Is there any guidance from monzo on why the majority of people are not eligible?

I feel like Monzo may refrain from commenting, they usually do when it comes to eligibility stuff

The most likely reason would be an existing or previous account on your credit record with someone with a poor credit rating. Or someone with a poor credit rating at your address, or issues with your own credit history.

Beyond those, it’s difficult to know what kind of criteria banks apply but they all have some. I know one bank that, for example, doesn’t allow joint accounts where there’s a high number of gambling transactions because of a risk of exploitation (this is not my policy lol, don’t ask me the full logic behind it! I just know it exists). So basically there could be any number of reasons and banks can offer or not offer accounts to anyone they like.

They don’t generally change their mind or tell people why so it’s better just to forget about it and look elsewhere

as i said on another thread certain people on here think this is their personal forum and can treat others how they like and monzo staff turn a blind eye to it , they need to realise that customers are entitled to ask questions on a monzo branded forum

No, that’s not the reason, nor is it gambling or crypto or something else like that. I don’t think there’s any point in us speculating though; just wanted to prod someone at monzo for an answer so that they’re aware this is upsetting customers and hopefully fix it, as they have before. For the same reason I think it’s a good thing threads like this are posted, even if it annoys some people who read the forum every day to see repeated content from different people.

Re changing their mind, well monzo have recently suspended the option for many users so they have changed their mind, and that is what is annoying and confusing their customers.

That they think it’s ok to do that to existing customers without explanation makes them a far less credible bank IMO and I say that as someone who’s used them from before they were a bank, I’d hesitate to bother applying now even if they brought it back as who knows what they’ll remove next.

When Mondo was young they were a refreshingly different kind of bank which cared about what customers thought and engaged with them, if I had one wish for current day Monzo in 2023 it would be for them to recognise the value of that ethos and strive to get back to it.

Brand credibility is a fragile thing.

To be fair, Monzo know why, and staff know why (ex staff here), but annoyingly still hasn’t been focused on for people to open JAs.

Honestly I think they know that not offering accounts to people is not what people want.

It’s their eligibility requirements though, which will come from their risk/regulatory position. Not something they are likely to change based on customer feedback to be honest.

this just happened to me.

I cant not be eligible! I have 0 risk and my partner has 0 risk and I have been full Monzo and have nothing to hide! you can see my wage going in so im not commiting any crimes.

And yet…

I haven’t done anything to get a risk factor.
Have huge wages going in and never had a single late debt my credit score is over 950

She works for a bank herself and knows theses things.

It is when people say its because you pose a risk.

You didn’t need to include that word.

Freaking out about it won’t help. Apply at the bank your wife works at for your JA.

I’m gonna go with it being crypto! it has to be!

Thats only one piece of many layers of data banks will use to determine if you’re eligible. On its own it means nothing
