Monzo Ukrainian Appeal

It appeared, but hasn’t done all day as I’ve been in and out of the app. Nice touch Monzo. on TestFlight

For reference, Natwest are also doing this, in so far as you can choose to donate your rewards (5 a month) to the cause, and they’ll match it. Which is a nice touch

Revolut matched a donation up to a certain date

I didn’t realise! I’ve just transferred £10 to my account but will donate this now instead.

I got an email about it today

I haven’t got this yet. Slightly annoyed with myself now if they are matching donations too.

I’m a bit surprised by the amount of donation matching and appeals honestly. It’s a huge security crises, but it’s not exactly the biggest humanitarian crises in the world right now (or even close to that!). But I guess it’s a case of people wanting to show their support for the West, plus it’s sort of the dominant news story.

Not that I mind the appeals, any money given is good and realistically a lot of it will go elsewhere (as it always does during these acute crisis raises), and the Red Cross does some outstanding work worldwide

There’s one factor that I’m not touching with a bargepole, but one I will flag up is - it’s happening in Europe. Easier to care about something that (potentially) directly affects you. The stuff stuff half a world away we can’t see and doesn’t affect us? Eh, no biggie. You own a football club and you’re Russian? We’ll sanction you. You own a football club and you’re Saudi Arabia? Yemen means nothing to me.

I also think the level of destruction is being under reported in favour of how well they are holding up against ‘one of the best armies’ and I also think the Ukrainian government also wants that to keep up morale, the levels of destruction in some cities is on the same level as Syria and Yemen.

It appears Russia’s strategy is to hit cities into submission and then use those examples as threats against other cities, they are reportedly contacting local authorities with the above threats.

Since fleeing refugees are easily ( and rightfully) getting into Europe so we will see and feel the stress on the system and cues people to donate, as said above people don’t feel close to crisis in the middle east.

yup ive just had the same sort of conversation else where with some one about palestine, yemen , saudi arabia , ect all sorts of humanitarian things going on that are widely ignored … but wont go there as thats not what this thread is about

Come on we can say it (well I can)… white people starving / in need is just easier for charities to raise money for from the West. It’s a reality that’s difficult to escape from.

@kolok the Red Cross can’t really do anything about shells hitting buildings anyway, the point with, say, Yemen is that hundreds of thousands of people have been starving there for years now, the level of deprivation reached extreme crises point quite a long time ago and hasn’t gotten better. I don’t mean to belittle the seriousness of the Ukraine situation - which again as well as being humanitarian is the biggest security threat the world has seen in a long time - but I think it would be naive to say that on a humanitarian basis alone it’s the same size or scale crises as Yemen, Afghanistan or Syria.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter, they will raise far too much money for Ukraine alone and redistribute it to those other places - that’s the norm for international emergency appeals and it’s a good thing

Fantastic work. Thanks for making this super easy.

As someone with family roots in the close region its fanstastic to see people coming together to support a crisis like this in Europe.
:ukraine:

Er, Monzo, that isn’t the Ukrainian flag, the colours should be horizontal.

Still not showing for me

Not really essential as long as the colours are there :man_shrugging:t3::sweat_smile:

I mean… the UK flag and the French flag could be the same by that logic

But you’d find it a bit odd if Monzo randomly turned, say, the Canadian flag, or the French flag 90°, right?

It’s a bit of a weird design choice. Flags aren’t just colours you can adapt to fit your design aesthetic. They do have a top and a bottom.

I see your point, though I don’t see it as an issue.

I mean the French flag flipped would be the Netherlands essentially!

It’s not an issue, but it is a bit weird that Monzo flipped the flag for no real reason. I just think it’s a bit thoughtless on the part of the designers, who wouldn’t make the same decision for a lot of other flags which have a more obvious correct orientation. Essentially it’s the same for the Ukrainian flag.

Rotating 90° wouldn’t be a problem for the Union Jack, of course, but the number of morons who happily hang that flag upside down at sporting events is incredible.

Interesting. I kind of now am wondering how you might differentiate some flags then if they were hung in that manner when they have similar colours (like the above France and the Netherlands).

This is veering off… but I do like a good flag debate.
