You can do both.
That is exactly why I asked on here as I was going through the sign up process and thought this doesn’t seem to be worth £3 a month let alone £6!
I’m sure it will get better in time, but for now it’s really not worth it. Other than a new card, I don’t understand what the benefits are for £3 because I already changed my Monzo.me username before for free.
The add-ons are not great imo, if it was £4 a month total for the travel insurance and card I think it’d be more compelling. The travel money one is just a waste of money.
I’m sure the answer would be yes, but just to check, do you keep your Monzo user number once you have changed to Monzo Plus?
Yes you do.
Thanks, Ordog!
So are you telling me it turns into £6.00 for them after the year is finished?
Yes, after 12 months you will be paying full price unless cancelled.
Oh my gosh you’re right. They really are having a laugh.
Time will tell as more options and features come onboard as it’s matures. Obviously it’s everyone’s personal choice and Monzo could always tweak the pricing at a later point.
There is a Q&A video knocking about the forums for those interested in what they’re working on, how they’re doing and what the plans are for Monzo Plus
I wonder what the pricing add on will be for airport lounge access? I currently have a santander select world elite mastercard which is £15 per month but has free access into all longue key airport lounges. That’s a good deal as its roughly £25-£30 per visit to an airport lounge. From what I’ve read they’re on about having discounted access not free access
I personally signed up at the prospect of mobile insurance; this probably is a poor decision but I do keep a flat £4000 in a regular pot to (help) cover the base £6 fee so I only feel as though I’m paying a £1 a month for a custom navy card.
To be honest, past my Monzo bias, it’s not really worth it right now if you can’t hold the £4000 in your account and don’t desperately need travel insurance.
An alternative way to think about it is that most banks charged you a flat £13-£21 a month for tons of insurance which you may never use, this does give you some impressive flexibility to choose a cheaper month plan that is more meaningful but you will pay £6 a month for just the flexibility alone.
Bottom line is that it’s actually hard to tell, we haven’t got access to all the add-ons yet and I don’t believe we’ve seen the full list of discount partners.
EDIT: I’ll be renewing my plus subscription.
Did I miss something about the Plus account? If I understand correctly, you get £60 interest on £4000 over the course of a year. The account costs £72. So you lose £12.
There are discounts on some products that COULD be worthwhile if used. If not, then the account costs money to hold. This is compounded for anyone who pays tax on their interest. Yes, before anyone states it, I know there is a tax free interest allowance.
There’s a slightly higher amount you can withdraw abroad per month without a fee. Everything else costs extra.
The account would have more appeal if there was a higher amount to receive interest on. Santander offers 1.5% on up to £20k, plus gives cashback on some direct debits, for a £5/month fee. Monzo would pull in a lot of money by paying interest on a higher amount.
In short, for now…no.
Presumably because Monzo want to make a profit on the account.
The benefits available for £12 pa aren’t worth it for me, so I never bothered. Others take a different view.
Going off comments here, people opted for early-access to Plus as a leap-of-faith. Including me.
I chose to subscribe early, get the early deal and see what happens. As part of my sign-up, I chose to go ‘basic’ and wait for the options to develop.
I did get a nice, differently coloured card and have since received interest on my Personal/ Plus account which I don’t use because I have a Monzo Joint Account - long story there…
And so far, this is it.
I am specifically interested in Travel Insurance, Vehicle Breakdown Cover and Mobile Device Cover.
But I don’t yet see these in my ‘Monzo Plus/Manage’ display.
I’m now 3 months into this with no access to any ‘post-basic-signup’ features. Priorities for me are;
- Travel Insurance - I’d like to have access to this via Monzo Plus now
- Vehicle Breakdown Cover - I’d like to have access to this via Monzo Plus now
- Mobile Device Cover - I’d like to have access to this via Monzo Plus now
- Metal card? would be nice with Plus now but there’s probably a different set of rules applying to this one
Emphasis on the word now. I am - as are others I’m sure - beginning to feel like the initial leap-of-faith really wasn’t worth it, even the reduced charging model is sadly deflating. And this deflation chips away at the positive foundations laid by the Monzo ethos.
Come on you Monzo Plus team - it is now time to shine and deliver!

Time to up the game here, patience isn’t everlasting.
I echo what @davidwalton said…
Hey team,
By way of introduction, I’m Benji
one of the product managers for Monzo Plus. I really appreciate those of you who’ve taken the time to share your feedback.
First, I want you to know how much we value everyone who’s signed up for Monzo Plus so far, and so early on in our journey. We don’t take your loyalty or enthusiasm for granted. Monzo only became the company it is today because of our community and we know you can help us make Monzo Plus amazing.
The technical complexity of building a billing system that allows subscribers to add new products is not easy - and as someone who themselves cannot add anything new right now - I understand those of you who are frustrated by that.
Over the past month we’ve taken on a lot of feedback about Monzo Plus; ranging from the complexity of the product, to the partnerships and offers available to users.
Off the back of this feedback, we’re spending August redesigning Monzo Plus to be simpler to understand and easier to sign up. We’re also looking at the overall product vision and looking for ways for us to expand more quickly to meet the needs of our loyal Plustomers.
I can’t promise that we’ll be able to meet all of your needs straight away; forming partnerships with companies that meet our high bar for quality of service isn’t easy, and neither is reducing the complexity of these offerings to make them simple to understand and sign up for. However, I can promise that we will listen and respond to the best of our abilities.
As for metal cards, we’re really excited to bring them to you! As some of the team have mentioned before, we’re still working on the best way to do that. Wait and see!
cough PayPoint cough
Must’ve slipped through the net
The rest of what you said is exciting and promising, I’m interested to see what happens next with Plus.
