Monzo Plus: Holographic Card discussion

I agree! That’s one of the reason why i don’t want to give up my coral card. The new card is nothing special. Too much marketing to make it look so appealing. But in reality they didn’t use same effort or marketing to advertise the coral card, it Just happened and people loved it!

Arrived sealed - they’ve doubled down with a sticker now. Wise!

Love the new card but do already miss the hot coral action. 🤷

I want to try Plus - I don’t think I see value in it but a lot of people do and so, for £15, I’ll give it a chance.

Do I have to have a new card though? I’d like to keep my current one and not have the hassle. I’ve no interest in holography.

Any thoughts?

No, you have the option for the new one or you can keep your existing card

Thank you - that seals it then, I’ll not bother trying as I don’t want the hassle of my card being cancelled if I decide (as I think is likely) to bin it after 3 months.

Thanks!

I think that’s a poor decision IMHO on Monzo’s part. I asked (as part of cancelling plus v3, which is not Value for Money) why and the answer was

“the holographic card is part of what we offer to people who subscribe”

Kind of feels like they’re having to justify paying for plus in that email - as if the other features don’t really add up to making it worth the cost

Feels more like stating the obvious to me.

You pay, you get a different card.
You don’t pay you get a normal card.

That pretty much encapsulates what having a ‘special’ card for Plus customers means.

I’m not sure how this relates to the coral cancellation bit you quoted there though.

True - but in old plus, even if you cancelled you still retained the plus card, which to me would’ve made sense and reduce down on plastic waste. Still feels like they are trying to pad out the features of plus - perhaps short term while they onboard vendors to cash back etc

I misquoted on the coral card btw in that it only relates in that when you cancel you get a new card

I see what you’re saying but the plastic waste thing is just coming across as a smoke screen of an argument at this point, to me.

If it’s an extra on a paid account I don’t see a reason not to take it away when people stop paying. The material it’s made of doesn’t change the argument in any way in my mind.

So if you take the holographic card and cancel within 3 months they charge you a fiver to cover the cost of the card (fair enough). But if you don’t take the holographic card when you cancel they then replace a perfectly good coral card with another one??

From a cutting down plastic waste perspective and the cost and energy used in production and shipping, road miles etc, that seems barking mad.

If they cancel the account just leave the card in place. I know it’s part of the plus feature but for all that waste and energy lost in producing another card, it seems pretty pointless to me.

I’m very frustrated with this, I’m open to criticism but this is just my opinion, the protocol of cancelling plus and issuing a basic card is a massive waste of plastic, money, resources, seems like a lack of common sense 101, if basic logistics were in place, to put it blunt, you look at the average cost of producing cards, they can vary but most can be £1.80 - £2.00 a card, you’ve got 50,000 + plus customers and if 50% ordered a new card that’s 25,000 that would work out approximately £47750.00 , Referring to the old plus briefly the amount of people ordering card after card after card because one was so anal about the quality, just makes you wonder why poor people lose their job , current shareholders get their investment diluted and yet a company with an increasing log book of losses can continue doing this, very bizarre practises, put restrictions in place and focus on the customer journey, or charge for the cost of a replacement!

For me (and I suspect others) it was less a problem of quality (scratches etc) than functionality. My first card the white on the numbers rubbed off making them unreadable. My second one bent when I used in in an ATM meaning it couldn’t be used and my third one the chip broke meaning I couldn’t use it when Apple Pay was not an option.

I will agree some are unhappy about quality of the new card, mine seemed ok and comparable wear compared to my other non monzo accounts, but I feel there’s a clear distinction needed here

I think he meant the people ordering different Coral cards to get a better ‘shade’

My Monzo Holographic card is about 3 weeks old. It looks a mess its scratched and marked all over. It works without any issue. It’s kept in a wallet. Placing the card in ATM and checkout unit is clearly marking he card.

Oh I understood his point, but it wasn’t all about looks, the first plus cards were un-functional for a number of users alongside how they looked due to the overall poor quality.

Fair play to Monzo- the new plus cards dont have this issue (or at least mine didn’t)

Does anyone know if the Monzo Plus debit card is sent by tracked mail? My app has gone from saying my card will be delivered by the 6th of September to saying my card has arrived and that I should activate it now, but I haven’t actually received it. I’m not sure if this is a bug or if my card has been delivered to someone else.

Support say it’s showing on their system as arriving by the 6th of September but it just seems weird that the app is telling me the card has actually arrived.

Standard post, I think.

Most deliveries were pretty swift: if you’ve not got yours, it’s probably worth dropping Monzo a line in the chat and they can resend it.

Give it a few days. The cards are not sent by tracked mail so the app is guessing when you may receive it.
