Monzo Metal Card

Pop round and give them a knock

Interesting. Because this warning had me slipping my card in a plastic slip. It annoyed me a bit as these are the two most likely places to keep the card!

I have mine in a leather wallet and not had any issues so far

I ordered my card on Tuesday and it still hasn’t arrived. Is anyone else’s card delivery taking this long?

I think a lot of people were receiving them the following day, once it passes the “expected” date in the app it lets you automatically order another one, might be worth dropping a message in the :monzo: Monzo Chat, I’m not sure if they are posted tracked

Just got mine, bit unimpressed.

The front doesnt “feel” like metal at all, and the weight is honestly barely noticeable, I wasn’t expecting a tonne of feathers, but there’s very, very little in it over a standard card.

The front surface is either plastic coated or some sort of anodisation, it makes it feel like plastic, its never cold to the touch for example. It looks as if it should feel like a macbook does, but it doesn’t, it doesn’t make a “tink” sound when you tap it with your nail, and it feels scratchy like a plastic coating
I’m not sure if its actually laser engraved or if they’ve just kept the metal shiny and put a plastic cutout on top, which would explain why it feels so cheap.

Previous people in this thread have mentioned that people notice when you hand them the metal card, but i genuinely dont think anybody could tell the difference without looking at it side on and going “Oh its made of metal”.

I feel like the Apple card may have been a better shout.

Also - The prestige of a metal card comes from being invited into the very elite Amex Black card club, not from paying for it. This is a gimmick at best, and if you have to explain to people that you had to essentially buy it, that prestige is long gone.

Edit - I think its powder coated, may have been a mistake over traditional painting.

Perhaps swap your hands around? I’ve got a 10 year old who said ‘wow that’s heavy, what’s wrong with it’.

they’re a child, of course they will find it heavier.

She’s actually quite good at Maths.

It’s a clear difference- it looks better :man_shrugging:

Yeah I was a bit miffed seeing that when it came up. I’d rather have known that before choosing the upgrade vs after.

Reports here saying the card still looks as good, but still, better to know early.

I guess from that the coating is powder coated, but so far I like the weight.

My leather card holder marked my coral card. Not happened to the blue one yet.

You shouldn’t give your bank card to anyone. Not only because of coronavirus, but for security reasons.

It shouldn’t leave your hands.

Didn’t say I did, just some of the reasons people “wanted” one in the earlier comments.

Just been faffing with the apple pay set up - and just had both old/Metal cards together.

Interesting that the Mastercard logo has the wordmark in it on Metal while the Holo card just has the logo.

There’s also a teeny tiny TM and © on the metal card
Which looks like a little paint chip from afar!

“Co-polyester resin”

I remember reading up on the MasterCard compliance document.

They changed it sometime last year where cards don’t need to show their brand name anymore, but apparently metal cards they still have to have them :man_shrugging:t2:

Interesting - thank you. I assumed that it was a black and white thing!

I was also wondering if it was a time thing. We know that some metal cards were ready to go over a year ago (weren’t they about to raffle some, or something, for Original Plus?!) so I imagine the stock’s been in the cupboard for a while.

Going to have to disagree on this one.

As soon as you pick it up you can feel the weight difference. I held my old plastic at the same time for comparison and you can’t miss it, it feels sturdy and substantial and the texture is lovely. It doesn’t feel like I am holding a piece of sheet steel true but it doesn’t feel like plastic.

If it was a simple slab of metal then I would be miffed, but this feels like a quality piece of kit. So I am more impressed than I thought I would be.

I love that all the printing is flat, so no raised numbers etc. I hate when you get a plastic card and in a week all the colour has rubbed off the numbers.

My only gripe is that the MasterCard TM logo looks like some kind of chip or crafting error, but if you get a magnifying glass out it is actually a little TM and not machine damage.

My point was more addressing the comments people had made earlier about handing it to waiters or leaving cards behind the bar at certain venues etc. If you have one in each hand yes, you can tell that one is slightly heavier, but in general use without the comparison I wouldn’t say its noticeable.

I think the powder coating was a mistake, painted steel might have been a better shout because then it would feel like metal, as that’s what it is, as opposed to whatever they have used to paint the surface with. Something like the back of an iPhone, for example, clearly metal, but not just a block of cut steel.

Don’t give your card to people.

Pandemic aside, this is a huge security risk.
