Monzo in the Media

Monzo don’t tell you when your account is frozen, they assume you’ll open the app before trying to tap your card. The only notification is Apple Pay telling you they suspended it. Barclays text to call the fraud team is more than Monzo do, and if the fraud teams need to contact you back they lay out the process for you over the phone instead of
 Please wait for the specialists sorry”

Yeah, in this case it was an iPhone. Clearly it got raised to the specialists as soon as I showed the screenshot of the Amazon order, I assume because iPhones are used more for fraud

I wasn’t aware customers were fleeing Monzo can you elaborate as I thought they had recently acquired 9 million customers.

When you say ‘tried again’ do you mean that transaction of the card in general? Because it may have been the payment processor - they often have their own rules and can refuse to send the transaction to the bank. We use Braintree at work and which is used by a lot of companies and it is really jumpy with freezing cards across the system, which is a pain as there’s no way for the bank or the merchant to overcome the block.

I’m not leaving either, I still love the app but I’m trying to provide some constructive criticism. I have a lot of good to say but even if Barclays doesn’t solve the issue on the call they’ll answer in a reasonable time and tell you what’s going on vs sending chat messages into a void to get a copy paste reply that a robot could realistically send

Ooo Monzo looking to be the most downloaded app in 2024 :tada:

Hmm true. Maybe a typo or just a prediction? Would be nice if Monzo did become the number one bank.

The Monzo adverts I’ve been getting on YouTube are some of the worst I have seen. There seems to be two types.

The first really short and doesn’t tell you why Monzo is worth getting. Seems pointless.

The second are TikTok style vidoes which are so incredibly annoying. Why would two people arguing over 1p make me want to bank with you? This continues for ages with a bunch of annoying situations that Monzo apparently makes better. Genuinely some of the most annoying adverts I’ve seen.

I know they are using targetting adverts considering they are focused on uni students, but it seems like an attempt by a bunch of 30 year olds to try to seem cool, but doesn’t come across well.

I’m absolutely shocked there’s an advert you don’t like.

I highly doubt you’d like it either if you saw it.

Nationwide, First Direct, and these Monzo YT adverts really aren’t great. I think the Natwest/RBS one is fine but doesn’t tell you much about why they are actually any good. I also quite liked the Santander ones with Ant and Dec. Were a bit of fun and actually highlighted features of Santander.

I really want to know who made this webpage

Who we are | first direct

Did they really think this was what people wanted from their bank :joy: Now this really does feel like a bunch of 40 year olds trying to be cool and completely failing.

They were the most annoying of the lot.

Looks like Monzo may be outsourcing some complaints staff.

Or it’s a missing comma and it’s Cleo, Complaints team.

They’re not actually called Gia or Cleo, they just forgot what name they were using between starting the email and finishing it?

Apple is taking its time but nudging into the banking industry. It has done this with many other industries. I wonder if Monzo should be more worried about Apple, than legacy banks catching up. The convenience of Apple’s ecosystem will give it a big advantage the more features it rolls out, and finally extends into the UK.

I’ve said it before many times… Apple should buy Monzo

That’s the only way to get into UK banking properly with a modern back-end that works.

That might even force me to use an iPhone, so come on Tim - splash the cash.

The patriotism in me doesn’t want Monzo to be bought. It’s such a great company and a genuine leader in the industry - no reason why it can’t expand and stand on its own two feet.

Oh, absolutely. I’m the same except it’s more of a ‘why hasn’t it happened yet?’ thing with me.

It just felt like the natural next step for Apple, especially after the card was launched in the US and people here in the UK were crying out for it.
