Monzo in Chile 🇨🇱

That’s the thing about Chile. You have to tell the cashier whether the card is debit or credit.
Anything issued outside Chile (Even a Debit card) goes through the credit card Network.
So just make sure to say: Credito, and then Sin Cuotas (No Instalments).
I didn’t have any issue with Contactless at all.

Can you elaborate on what exactly you did to access cash like this?

Have a Bank account in Chile.
Withdrawals are free for Chilean cards.

Ah. Not easily done if not resident then.

Thanks anyway.

Hi All,

Scotia Bank does not charge any fee as of Dec 22.

Update 23/3/23 - Scotiabank still is fee free ATM withdrawals. Got stung by a nasty 8,500 CLP fee from Banco de Chile the week before, ouch.

Update: Scotiabank and Itau still free. Banco de Chile costs 8,500peso! I’m unsure about other banks.

IMPORTANT: most ATMs for Scotiabank and Itau are inside the bank so only available during the bank’s opening hours which can be quite short and lenient. There are Banco de Chile ATMs in some supermarkets and gas stations so are a good (but expensive) plan B.

You can pay with card in pretty much all shops, especially minimercados. It’s the accomodation like hostels (even in big towns) that surprisingly only take cash.
